Coilovers

Can anyone recommend a good brand of coilovers for a 2010 Acura RL?

Do a search. You will find that there are not many offered. Tein Comfort Sport and Street Flex or Largus which is a brand offered in Japan. Aspec (If you can find) or Mugen (again if you can find). Someone on the board is working with D2 on a version from the RL. He should be finished the test fit this week.

D2, blech.

The best one you are going to get without a headache is one of the Tein options.

Anyone have any info about the difference between the Comfort Sport and the Street Flex regarding the ride quality, height adjustability and EDFC compatibility ?

I've heard of people with other Honda/Acura running D2. I'm more curious about the headache part. What is the headache running a Japanese setup? Im curious because I ran Mugen last summer and have a set of Largus in the garage for this summer. I never had any problem with the Mugen except there was no option to go lower. Whats your experience?

Basically, they are an entry level system. Different people with different cars say different things about the ride. They are a Taiwanese brand which in itself ins't bad but they are not putting the same energy into engineering, tuning, and quality that a company like Tein, Koni, or H&R do. It just feels like kind of a cheap thing to do on an RL.

The headache with Mugen isn't going to be the quality; it is going to be justifying the cost, if you can get your hands on a set still, when you compare the features against some other more cost-effective options.

I cannot speak directly on the ride of the Street Flex but here is what I can say:

The Comfort Sport is very comfortable and not so sporty. That said it has a very well designed valve and it is a mono-tube system so it really is a pretty sophisticated setup. It will not go very low but if you are just looking to take it down a bit it is a great kit.

The Street Flex is a newer product line. Twin tube so the cost is lower than the Comfort Sport, and it is designed to be more sporting. It will allow more height and spring pre-load adjustment.

Either should allow EDFC use.

Supply on either one is going to be volatile. They are usually special order from Japan.

All options are expensive. Even looking over seas. I got my mugen setup for a reasonable cost or I wouldn't have it really, Tein is just as expensive I find.

You get a little more in the way of features with Tein, though...adjustable dampening, adjustable height, and they are rebuild-able.

No knocking Mugen at all...I'd be fired from my own company. Just hard to find the value from my viewpoint.

You're totally right. The only reason I got the Mugen was to say I have it really haha. It was hard to find Aspec in decent shape and Mugen popped up for a real good price in Japan so I jumped on it. Rode them for a season and they were nice but I really wanted to go lower so got a set of the Largus.

Do you have much experience with them? I believe they are adjustable like the Tein. Have you heard much?

Mugen, for different cars, has different applications. I honestly cannot give any direct feedback on the KB kit.

I ordered a set from autohance because they said they had 1 set in stock. 2 weeks later I called and was told that the set in stock was defective and it would be 2 months for the order, FML. Autohance apologized and offered a full refund. I responded and requested expedited option. The guy was awesome, said they would Air it out free of charge and today only a week later DHL sent me my tracking details. Soon I should have these in hand !!

D2 is available now on ebay. Largus will require a Japan connection or luck on Yahoo! auctions Japan.

I would think we could source from Japan. We get a monthly shipment of genuine parts.

Although looking at their site it appears not much different than D2. They way these Taiwanese kits work is they are mostly all private label. Meaning you can get the same kit in different colors branded with different names, but essentially be getting the same thing.

The problem is, everything is speculation, and I really don't trust the companies until I can get to know them. Tein, for me, is really the best option.

I know there are differences in spring rates between the different brands. I'm not sure about features between the shock absorbers like adjustable dampening factors though. Do you think they could be using the same shocks and different springs?

Are you willing to look into sourcing Largus coilovers? It's always great to have more options especially from board sponsors/vendors.

Thanks for the update on the coilovers. Any feedback on TEIN/Largus that are installed on an RL? I drove my father-in-laws (low miles) 2005 530i and it has great communicative feel to the road. My goal is to have the RL tighten up and give a similar or better feel. The potential is there, I just need to find the right product.

I'm pretty sure all three options have adjustable dampening. We haven't heard a complaint about any of them.
