Will Reloading NAV cause Phonebook and preferences to be lost?

I've read that the only way to clear messages (if they are hanging) is to reload the NAV system. Will this cause the preferences to be lost?
Thanks

I have reloaded my NAV on two separate occasions and did NOT lose preferences/address book entries/etc.
