Trip computer problems
I'm having a problem with my trip computer which just started. My average speed almost always reads 22 mph regardless whether I am driving around town or on a trip on the interstate. Sometimes it will read 23 mph but no higher. This seems to have altered my average fuel consumption which normally averages 18 mpg around town but now only averages 13 -14 mpg. I use the auto reset custom function and have tried manually resetting the average speed, all to no avail! Does anyone know of a way to "reset"/reboot the system to fix this?

Remember the MID has Trip A and Trip B settings and computations.
Toggle the MID to display AVG MPH. Press and HOLD the center MID Select / Reset button until the AVG MPH clears.
If you have the MID to reset on each tank fill up, I believe it only resets Trip A.
Trip B may not be reset and therefore you are seeing the AVG MPH since it was last reset. If it was not reset, it is over the life of the car and will fluctuate only minimally by law of averages. That may be what you are seeing.
Likewise, Trip B may be showing AVG MPG over the life of the car, whereas Trip A may be showing only AVG MPG for that tank.
If you do not want to be confused by the two...reset BOTH Trip A and Trip B at each fill up.
Toggle the MID to display AVG MPH. Press and HOLD the center MID Select / Reset button until the AVG MPH clears.

From my 2006 RL Manual:
"When you reset Trip A, average fuel
economy A is reset at the same time.
When you reset Trip B, average fuel
economy B is reset.
In the customizing mode, you can set
Trip A and average fuel economy A
to reset at the same time when you
refuel your vehicle"
I says nothing about the AVG MPG and AVG MPH being reset together, other than the resets for A and B are independent. I can only assume that AVG MPG must be manually reset for both Trip A and Trip B. I was referencing the AVG MPG in my post as a similar feature as to how it is reset (aside from the auto reset on Trip A option).
The 2006 Manual also has no mention of a 1000 mile reset.
It is possible the 2005 MID functions slightly different than 2006 MIDs. I recall there were minor program changes in the MID from 2005, though not clearly published....as to anywhere I can find.

I know on mine (2005), both A and B will reset at 1000 miles (independently, i.e. they reach 1000 at different times). They never go over 1000 in the MID.
Elapsed Time resets every time I start car.
Ave Speed does not reset with A,B or car start and must be reset independently.
Seems like there are a few flaws in this logic, so they must have fixed in 2006.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to refill this morning and I'm going to reset all A & B functions and see what happens. Sorry I'm so late responding to you but I've been out of town for two days. I'll give you a update in a couple days.

Thanks TampaRL! I filled up this morning. A reset as programed and I reset B, and presto, as soon as I started driving my AVG MPG started working properly again! Appreciate the help.

what about ave speed?

I was wrong - ave speed does reset if Trip A is reset (sorry Tampa). I could of sworn it has not been reseting. The only thing I'm wondering is if ave speed does not reset if Trip A miles "turns over" to zero at 1000 miles.

aha! - I now know what is going on with ave speed.
Ave speed does reset when you manually reset Trip A. However, if you let Trip A rollover at 1000 miles to 0 miles it does not reset the ave speed. I watched it yesterday. Not sure what the logic is for that or if it is a software bug.
That explains why I thought it did not reset as I usually do not Reset the Trip meter. I also do not have it set to reset during fillup. Wonder if that resets ave speed?
