NAV Freezes and Reboots

Thought I'd post this here and see if others have any experience. Just purchased my '05 RL on 1/24/09. When I bought it the NAV DVD was missing but the dealer (Mercedes/Nissan) promised it was coming. Today I picked it up and put it in the NAV-DVD in the trunk but the system just locks up or sometimes boots up and allows you to go into the menus only to lock up in random places. If the map displays sometimes it will show squiggly lines, other times nothing. The NAV will randomly reboot. Let me say first that the dealer has promised to make it right. The DVD version was 3.5x so not the newest but it looked like it was in good shape. Has anyone experienced problems with the NAV system that sounds like this? At best I would think it's a bad DVD. Are there any known issues like this? Thanks in advance for your insight.

I think you should insist on the latest version (4.73) which requires a software upgrade as well as map data upgrade; 2 disks.
Its only $149. the dealer can afford that.

Yes. In a 2005, you should be using the White Disc 4.1x at a minimum. You should get either 4.64 or 4.73 in order to be able to upgrade correctly. Prior versions (4.3x and maybe 4.5x up through 4.62 for sure, upgrading with a 2005 was problematic. It was even problematic with a 2006. Not sure about 4.63

Isn't the 3.x series the orange disks? If so, it is incompatible with the 05+ RL which needs the white 4.x disk series. Not being an Acura dealer, he probably just went out and bought an "RL Nav disk" perhpas figuring they were all the same. He needs to get you the correct disk.

If by orange disk you mean the writing was orange on CD-silver then yes, that's what this Navteq labeled disk looks like. I found a reference in the Aug 2005 Service Bulletin that said if you put the wrong NAVI disk in it can cause symptoms leading you to believe there is a NAVI hardware problem. Based on the input I've gotten here and on the www.acuranavi.com site I've emailed the dealer and asked them to purchase the newest version as it's only $149 right now. This site is a great resource, thanks for the assistance. I will update here with a status update/resolution.

That's not an Acura Nav disk. Looks like the disk for the Honda's. The Acura disk is white.

Well it's almost 2 weeks since I purchased the car and today I convinced the dealer to bite the bullet and buy version 4.73 new. It was ordered today. FINALLY, I'm looking forward to having the NAVI.

Excellent! Now, there's something you have to ensure: that when they order your disc, they properly input which (ancient) version of the DVD your car last had. This doesn't change the price, but the older versions receive TWO discs for an incremental upgrade (newer only need/get the second disc) and You need that double set.

Holy crap! How do you know what old version it was when you don't have the disk?

I think the 2 disks come with the upgrade by default. The first disk is the software upgrade, second is the dvd with map info. I would run the software upgrade no matter what version you have now.

Thanks, I hope that's the case. I figure if the order was placed yesterday that it will ship today and take 4 days. Thursday hopefully.

No, if you're upgrading from 4.62 or later, for example, they only send one disc. People upgrading from 4.3x get both discs. If you get both discs and don't need the first...no harm and no extra fee. If you get only the single disc I received in my upgrade from 4.62, but needed the first disc also, you are "bummin'".

Well the dealer (Feldmann's Imports in Minneapolis, MN) called Thursday night saying the disk was in. I went there late Friday afternoon and to my surprise the "new" disk that was handed to me was version 4.13!!!! It does work but after making me wait for so long and after ordering it "new" needless to say they lost a huge opportunity to make a satisfied customer. I may be ordering a new one shortly.

Sounds like they went to eBay or something.
