I-009: 2005 RL Rear View Camera Installation w/pics
Just did this mod on my '05 RL. I wanted to thank 470hpGS400 for posting the original guide to perform this mod. It worked like a charm! I thought I would add my notes to help others that might consider doing this upgrade.
First, 470hpGS400 recommendation for the NAVTool & camera are spot on. I did purchase both components on ebay. Search for Navtool Acura and you should find some listed. The camera that he used fit like a champ.
Second, a cautionary message regarding routing the cable through the trunk lid. I believe 470hpGS400 disassembled portions of the trunk to route the camera cable. I was uncomfortable with disassembling the trunk hinge for I feared that I couldn't get it put back together perfectly (like from the factory). I rather cut the camera cable and easily threaded the cable through the hinge and resoldered the cables back together (I'm better with electronics than I am with body work).
Next, the electical point that I used for the backup light was the brown wire in the left rear of the trunk just below the left rear taillight. This powered both the camera as well as the blue wire for the Navtool. Remember to place a protective fuse (not provided in the kit). For the Acc power (for Navtool), I used the purple wire that goes to the XM/Acuralink box (just tapped into this line).
Finally, I mounted everything adjacent to the XM/Acuralink box for ease of access for future fixes if necessary.
Again, I wanted to thank 470hpGS400 for taking the leap of faith and making the mod as well as sharing the information with others.

I did see the eBay Navtool listings and wondered how good they might be. Navtool website shows a red housing while the ebay ones are grey...made me wonder if they were the real deal...??? I suppose if it works, it doesn't matter.
I plan to tackle this mod on my 2005 RL. Thanks again for the update.
Rodfern,
I would just go to ebay. Search "navtool acura" and you should find a vendor (out of NY, I think). I remember the price being $225. Don't sweat the color of the unit. When I bought mine, the picture was gray but I received a red one. Like you, I questioned the authenticity of the unit and it did ultimately turn out just fine.
Incidentally, the camera was only ~$59 for the same one that 470HPGS400 acquired.

Heavy...
I will love you forever if you post detailed pictures of how you did this. I want to do this so bad to my '05, but have no clue how to feed to wires, or where to mount the camera, or splice the wires.

haha, I am trying... everything is in and whether it is in reverse or not all I have is a black screen.
I unhook the harness and put it back stock and everything factory works.
I'm stumped, I'll be emailing them tonight for help.

hmmm
navtool for your year right?
should just be the pnp plugs, the power/ground plug, and a couple of other wires right? backup and a couple of wires that need to be grounded.
what exactly are the connections?

yes confirmed for my year.
connections= 9 pin in the back of the nav unit, blue to back up, dual white to ground, 12v +/- power to the camera and box.
I have a feeling its in the box.

yes, i have two brightness buttons (+ & -), and the RGBS (what ever) switch.
Nothing is working, I've even swapped out the video cable to a higher quality.
The deal here for me is that I get nothing in park, drive, nor in reverse, so its seems that the signal is lost in the cable or at the box.

I have a PCI VCI-X installed in my 05 and no problems at all. It was pretty easy to hook up, too. Here's the instruction manual:
http://www.pac-audio.com/PACProductD...ons_071706.pdf
You should be able to find one for around $250. This doesn't include the camera.

The Navtool at navtool dot commm is $350!! Anyone know where it's found for less than $200? Nevermind....just saw the ebay references for finding it at a lower cost...

Why do we need navtool or similar interface to connect backup camer? There is a dedicated backup camera interface in the navigation unit (connector G, Upper left green 7 pin connector). I got this info from navigation unit service manual. I wonder 2005 RL has that this camera interface enabled or not. Has some body tried to connect a camera directly to this interface?
Interface details;
pin description
---- -------------
1. Power source for rearview camera
2. GND rearview camera
3. GND for video signal
4. Composite video from rearview camera
5. Shield for 1,2,4,5,7
6. Control signal for rearview camera.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Green Screen
Started having battery trouble 2 months ago, went to the acura dealer ship, they replaced the alternator, had to take it again for battery issues they took the bluetooth unit out since it was draining the battery. The Backup camera screen (when in reverse) goes green. Any ideas?
