How to Renew Your XM Radio for $77 a year.

I just shut down my XM service (returned my RL). But if I still had the car, i'd gladly take the 50 stations for $6.99 like Sirius currently offers. I don't listen to even 3/4 of all the stations XM/Sirius have. If they (being XM/Sirius) keep this outrageous price point, I guarantee they will go under within 3 years.
Update: XM/Sirius will start charging an extra $1.95/month for "royalty fees" to the Record Labels. So, now you're looking at $14.90/month. Any takers????

I just signed up on my '06 bought in March. po service expired in June so I went without for a little while. Just called and asked for a 3 month trial. He said ok and then offered to add on 12 months at $159.
I declined saying I wanted to try it out first but I had heard of a $77 deal. After holding for a minute he came back with the ok on $77.
I accepted but told him I did not want auto renewal. He said they will send me a bill with a $2 service charge. 15 months for $79..I'm happy.

Oddly enough after I got the 77 deal, I just received a REAL $77 coupon.
I think that at this point, $77 is better than nothing to them, and DEF. worth $77 to me.
Even trade. Were both happy.

Call #1: I said annual rate was too high - transferred to oblivion.
Call #2: No answer.
Call #3: I said annual rate was too high. Transferred to "customer service". Connected after 10 minutes. I said annual rate was too high and my other radio was $77, but they needed a deal code (winback no good). I said I'd rather just cancel. Transferred to someone else. I said, the annual rate is too high. They offered $77 renewal. I said OK and await a new invoice.

Update:
I called XM today and got a 3 month free trials + 5 months for 19.99! Pretty good promo as it equal about to about $4 a month (compared to $6.40 for the $77 deal) or add the free trial with it to = $2.50 a month.

3 month trial doesn't include online pc listening
I also elected the 5 month trial but later learned I would need to pay another $7-8 fee on a 6 mo subscription to listen to XM online. So in the end, the $77 is the better deal cuz it includes both online and radio listening.

Being told $77 is now $88.78
I was just told that a new royalty fee, effective 7/29/09 requires an additional 11.78 to the $77. So they want $88.78 for 12 months
Has anyone else heard of this?

Worked again for me today. Told CSR I wanted to cancel. He transferred me to a more potent CSR. Key question seemed to be " you think the price is too high?" OF COURSE. Moved right into renewing @$77 "+state and local taxes." Also set up auto renew again. I will have to try again next year.

I did not want a lapse in service. I call an pretended to be niave and asked what the renewal rate was. I was quoted something like $147. I said it was too expensive and wanted to cancel.
They transfer you to a 'retention' agent who is eager to keep you as a subscriber. I again said it was too expensive. The retention agent simply offered me $77 and I renewed on the spot.
No need to deal with the lapse in service.

I called last week and they offered me the $77 deal plus the $4/month for NAV, but they wouldn't wave the new Royalties fee of about $12. I thought I'd give it another week and call again. Has anyone gotten around the Royalties fee?

I called to cancel with the real intention of renewing at a lower ($77) rate. I tried to make the royalty fee an issue to see if they would let me cancel because of it.
They let me cancel.
I called back later in the day to accept the $77 and royalty fee. Taxes, etc. about $90 a year. Better than the ~$140 something I was paying.

I renewed today. The salesperson immediately agreed to the $77.00 plus $3.99/mo for nav, but then went into heavy sales pitch for everything -- 3 year follow on deals, 1 year follow on deals, XM radios for the home, etc. None of the deals were better than the $77, so I waved off everything else. I'll just have to pitch it again next year. I suspect she charged me the royalties fee, but never said anything about it.

just another data point. XM was expirinhg so I called to renew. They offered the usual deals at regular price, I told the guy I got an offer in the mail for $77 plus tax. The guy immediately offered me the deal, total was $88 and change.
this is about the right price point for sat radio

Just wanted to say thx to everyone's posts over here. Moved on to a Mazda 3 a few months back, but Sirius (XM) was giving us grief on giving discounts. I shared your posts with my fellow Mazdaites and they were successful in "encouraging" them to give Sirius customers the same deal! Gratze!

3rd Time's a Charm
It took 3 calls, but finally got the $77 offer (plus royalty fee). Turns out I had a $12.95 credit -- no idea where that came from -- so the whole deal cost me $75.83.

Mine was expiring in a couple of days, so I called yesterday (10/22). According to the CSR, the $77 rate I got last year was a 1 time deal. But she said to hold while she looks for any type of promotional deal. She came back and said that there is a half price deal. To make long story short, I got it at $88 which includes the royalty fee everyone has talked about. I also added nav traffic for $47.88. So all in all, I got charge around $135.
There's my experience for this year!

I also called "to cancel", after receiving a renewal form that took my fees up to 270 or so. After responding to the "why are you canceling" with the cost issue, I was offered and took the same deal the two posts directly above this one did.

I just bought an 05 RL yesterday, XM works (but no Stern), traffic does not. I have to assume the guy who traded in the car paid for XM for the year and at some unknown point, it will run out.
Sounds like traffic is extra $$$ ???
And how do I add Stern?
Thanks

XM renewal
I just renewed for the 136.66 discussed above, without much haggling. However, watch out, since I heard the automatic renewal in one year is about $170.

Just renewed for $77 as well, but also got whacked for the royalty fee so the total was more like $90. I had received the notice of renewal and I called up to say I was cancelling. The rep offered to continue my previous $77 rate. It took just moments for the whole thing to be done. Hassle free.

Just renewed today. got a quote of the new $88.XX/1 yr price point thats been mentioned above. said it was too expensive, so they ended up giving me 6 months for $34.50. no effot. BOOM. Works for me...

Promo: $20 for five mos XM radio
Just called in today to see what they were offering. I signed up for $20 for 5 months, radio only. Nav Traffic would be $3.99 per month, which I don't need.
I was on a month to month plan which I know was too expensive!! I told them I needed to cancel, and they said hold and came back with this promo.

still available
i was successful today. still $88.78 for 1 year total.
as others have said: the key thing is to tell the first few representatives that you want to 'cancel'. don't waste your time trying to find a good deal until they pass you through 1 or 2 other people.

called in today, asked to cancel. Xfered to 2nd person, asked to cancel, was asked why I was cancelling, told em the price is too expensive.
Was immediately offered to renew my current plan, agreed to the same $77/year with no added costs, accepted.
Thanks all for keeping this thread running.

My service was to be up in a week (Dec 30th) so I just called right now to renew.
The first person I spoke to, I told her that I would like to renew for the same price that I have been paying the previous 4 years which is the $77 amount. She told me that since that was a promo price, promo prices only last one year (yeah right, if she only knew) and that I would have to switch to the general service fees. I told her, "No thanks, I can't afford that, please cancel my service" and she then had me hold to speak to the next person in line.
The next guy asked me what he could help me with. I said, "Yeah, I would like to renew for the same price I got last year but if I can't, then I want to cancel because I can't afford anything higher." He said, "Oh, so you can't afford? Ok, hold on please while I speak to my supervisor and maybe we can help you find a promo code, please hold."
He comes back on and says, "Yes sir, my supervisor gave me a promo code for you so we will renew you for the same amount as last year plus the taxes and fees and it comes out to $88.78."
So yeah, it worked for me yet again and I guess the $88.78 amount is the new $77 these days. Still good. This is the second year in a row that I did it via this approach of demanding that I get the same rate as the previous year and threatening cancellation if I don't.

I just received my XM invoice to renew my XM Radio plus Nav Traffic Service. For some reason, they invoiced me for a year of NAV traffic at $47.88 which I expected, plus $10.44 for 3 weeks of the Radio Service (weird). The rep I spoke to could not explain the 3 week radio service part so I just said I was prepared to renew everything for a year at the same rate as last year or I'd have to cancel... ie. $77 + $47.88, plus tax. The first service rep couldn't do that but passed me on to somebody who could. So I explained the whole situation again but the rep wouldn't budge on the additional marketing fee on the Radio Service, bringing it up to $88.78. I said I'd go for that provided he threw in the online access (xmradio.com---$2.95/mo.) for free. After a brief chat with a "supervisor" he said "OK". So It's XM Radio for $88.78 plus Nav Traffic for $47.88 plus XM radio online for free, plus tax---all for 1 year. Just be firm, and you can easily get this type of renewal deal... For me it's my third go-round!

is it possible to get traffic for $47.88 a year (stand alone) or must one do the XM as well? The statement (which didn't have any real deals) only showed XM alone or XM + traffic.
I'm fine with both, but I'd like to know my options. Thanks!

XM won't let you buy just the NavTraffic (I've asked). It's an add-on to the radio service.
I canceled my XM service a few weeks ago. I wasn't crazy about the change in the music channels post-merger and I wasn't listening to it too much anymore. Plus their shady billing practices are just too much to take. My wife decided not to renew her service, and since she changed her credit card and XM didn't have the new number, she just let her subscription expire. Instead of calling her to inquire about the new billing info, they sent her a notice from a collection agency demanding money. They'll never get another nickel out of us.
