F-018: Center Console Power Outlet stays open

The power outlet on the center console of my 05 RL will not close. The dealer told me they would have to replace the console trim that costs $225 to fix it. I took the console trim off to see what the problem is and found the very small female latch piece not engaging the male piece to hold the outlet in a closed position.

Does anybody know of a cheaper fix to this problem? Thank you!

besides looking for parts in junk yard, ebay... I'll say try some kind of silicone/urithane.... apply a thin layer, wait till it's dry, and it'll prob. catch....

I know it's ghetto, but if you don't plan on using the power outlet, then glue it shut. LOL!! If the need comes up, you still have the other outlet in the under the armrest center console storage. Or do it right, bite the bullet and buy a new console trim piece for $225.

There seems to be a TSB for this...

It is a lot of trouble to take apart and mess around with the small pieces. Mine was the same. It works now, but the time it took was not worth it if I had to repeat it.Time to upgrade to the wood console. ;)

Found the answer

Thanks for the replies. There is a service bulletin on it and the dealer can sell a part for $4 and change. It took me 10 minutes to replace the ratchet lock and that fixed the problem. It irks me that the service advisor at the Acura dealer didn't tell me about the service bulletin and the easy cost effective fix. Another dealer's part dept. told me about it.

Thanks for all the help.

Does anyone have the TSB?

I have the same problem on my '05 rl, does anyone have the service bulliten, the link above goes to a pay site? Or maybe just the part number and some keys to a successful job....

Just talk to your parts guy at your local dealer. I went in told him what the problem was advised him of the TSB and he was already aware of it and got me the parts for $6. Took my girlfriend, not me her 2 minutes to change it out. So if she can do it that easy then i should hope you gentleman can handle that task.

I took the bad part(thr female piece no longer locks when the male piece is inserted) to the parts guy at two seperate dealerships and explained the problem. Both of them looked at me like they had no clue. I even explained that there had been a TSB. They both pulled up a diagram of the console unit that was so poor in quality that we could not even find the exact part number with any degree of accuracy. Both suggested i buy a whole new console. If you got the part # it would be appreciated.

When we were shopping for a used '05 RL, it seemed that about half of the cars we looked at had broken console power outlets (either wouldn't open or stay closed)

COMplex 04-12-2009 03:04 PM

I have the same problem, with the addition of the cup holders doing the same thing.

I can get it closed 1/10 tries. I may need to purchase both ;)

jtevis 04-15-2009 01:30 PM

Thanks for the part number DXplicitOne, I assume you have to take apart the center console to swap that part?

Although it doesn't bother me, this fix is so easy Im going to have to get it done now. thanks for the tip

I imagine you have to take off the shifter trim. IIRC, it just "pops" off when pulled straight up with your fingers.

Gallbladder 05-08-2019 09:41 AM

Just found this thread. My '05's accessory power socket door has been open for years, and I'm finally getting around to it. Ordered part 77297-SJA-003, but it's not obvious to me how to go about actually installing the little thing. I'm aware of the TSB, but I can't get any of those websites to let me in without $$ to view it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to make this repair? Will it become obvious if I remove the whole shifter area cover?

How do you install this little booger? (The black one on the right.)
