DVD Reading Error...My Story
 

Recently I started getting the dreaded "DVD Reading error" message on my Navi screen in my 2006 RL with just over 100K mikes.

I did some researching here and learned I needed to replace possibly the main circuit board and DVD read mechanism in the trunk unit. A visit to the local dealership quoted $500+, so I decided to do it myself.

A little elbow grease and $158 later, I have a working Navi system, and Alpine even replaced the scratched disc at NO CHARGE.

I removed the trunk mounted player in about 45 minutes..it was pretty easy.
you need to remove the top trunk trim partially, documentation for this can be found in the service manual, or you can download the instructions for installing the read spoiler, which gives instructions on removing the same trim piece to replace the pistons that hold up the truck itself due to the added weight the spolier adds, so you need some stronger pistons.

The trim piece is held on with with 7 clips and you can just let it hang down to get at the DVD unit. It's held in by 4 10MM screws that you can use a socket or Phillips screwdriver, but the two left side screws need to be gotten out with the smallest socket drive you have as the left trunk piston is very close to that side of the DVD player. Once the screws are out there are four or five plugs to disconnect(easy to do)

Then I just sent the player to Alpine Honda\Acura OEM repair in Torrance, CA. The website said it would take 4 to 6 weeks, but I got mine back in less than 2 weeks. My DVD had the concentric scratches that are indicative of DVD read machanism malfunction TSB 08-035: (2006-2010 RL) DVD Read Error, or No Route Displayed, and Navigation DVD Is Scratched. I printed out the TSB and included it with the player when I sent it out. Alpine charges a flat fee of $158 to repair the unit.

It turns out I should have sent the DVD in with the unit, as they called me and asked me where it was. When I told them I removed it, they asked me to send it to them as well, so they could replace it!

Anyway, i hope that will help someone if they are ever in the same boat as I was.

:what: How much does the spoiler weigh? I put 2/3 of a package of Dynamat on my trunk lid. :tomato:

No idea as I just downloaded the spoiler instructions because one of the steps was removing the lining on the bottom of the packge shelf.

Since the pistons(at least on my car) don't pop the trunk up, but rather just balance it, I would imagine the weight of the spoiler would prevent them from hold it up, hence the beefier pistons that come with it.

Navi screen blacked out
 

My screen went black tonight while driving. Bluetooth, radio, phone, XM all function normally. Just no display on the screen. The screens has a very dim backlight as it really goes "black" when ignition is turned off.

No welcome screen displayed at startup. Display brightness is not functioning as well as all other Navi (and Audio) buttons produce no results.

Is this a display issue or the DVD unit in the trunk? Care is out of warranty.

Any ideas?

Sounds to me like a display problem.


Small update for my story; Today I received an UPDATED DVD from Alpine! It's not the latest, and it's only 4.55A to 4.56A, but it is a brand new DVD. Very impressed with Alpine OEM Acura Honda repair!

wow, that's great about the nav. now this is the kind of info we need for people like me. The blacked out screen is a serious issue though, you should make a new thread for that if one does not exist. I wonder if there is am RGB output from the nav computer in the back that you can tap into to get a laptop output hooked up to to test the display. I say this because the navtool taps into the truck, no? and it has an RGB input so the stock monitor must run on that. it would be nice to retrofit a 480p monitor into the dash, but that would make the stock graphics look blurry or soft, but look great on DVD's. The dealer will surely want $500 for the monitor which is worth no more than $150.

Great post! As of today, Alpine is now charging $358(flat). I've tried every option to get my error message fixed but it seems I will have to spend the money to get fixed :ugh::ugh::ugh:
