2005 Nav DVD 'check your disk', cleaned but still not working

Hi,

I got the 'check your disk' error on my 2005 nav a few months ago. The dealer said I first needed to buy the new disks before they'd even look at it. Got the new disks but those also didn't load. This weekend I removed the player (cursing all the way) and opened it up. I was sort of hoping to find dirt but everything looked shiny and new. I plugged it back in with the top open and could see the disk spinning. Clearly the drive isn't completely broken but something is.

Is there anything else I can try before buying a used unit from a totaled car? I know I can send the unit to Alpine for fixing but the cost is around $400 so I've heard so I'm not that eager. On a related note I'm pretty miffed that the entire screen is useless with this problem. It is one thing to use your nav but that you don't see your audio and climate screens anymore is pretty poor.

Thanks for any tips you may have!

Sander

I should add that I ran a cleaner disk in the player a few times before removing the drive. That is why I said 'cleaned' in the topic. Not sure it removed anything as the drive was pristine inside.

Nocturnal, check out the link below. By removing the Nav DVD drive and cleaning the laser, the disk error was resolved.

Hi,

Thanks for responding. My DVD drive including the lens is spotless. No dirt on the outside, none on the inside. I expected at least dust bunnies but nothing. It looks new. I suppose there is no harm in putting some alcohol on the laser lens but I doubt it's the problem. That is why I was asking for advise beyond cleaning. If there is nothing else to do I will buy a new (used) drive on Ebay.

looks like your unit bite the dust, at this rate I would remove and send the unit for Alpine (manufacture of the drive) for a full refurbish, I think it cost around $400.

Any resolution to this? Having the same issue with my '05 RL. Screen started to freeze up during my commute. Then went in to "downloading new software" mode, then I got the "please check disc" error screen. Has been unable to get past that for the last few days.

More than likely a bad nav drive, unfortunately....
