What % tint to go with?

I was thinking maybe 35% tint on the rear window and 50% on all 4 side windows...similar to what is on the TL here:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107277

Any thoughts?

I love the look, but it might be worthwhile doing a little research since different states (and certainly different Canadian provinces) have laws which restrict the amount of tinting that can be used on the driver's and passenger's front window. These restrictions have been put in place to protect local law enforcement officers who are unable to see inside the car when they pull the car over. This may be a moot point in your area, but it is worth double checking before you put a lot of money into that gorgeous tinting.

Yeah, we can't have tints on the front windows, but it will be so light, and even then if I get pulled over, I can just remove it or pay the $50 fee. I will make sure and put down all the windows when getting pulled over so the cops are comfortable - but I know I may still rcv a ticket.

It is stupid for places to restrict tint on the front windows. The whole point of tint (to me at least) is to help keep the sun out. I drive the car and because of that I want the front side windows to help keep the sun out of my eyes/off my body. Having driven the RL on the test drive with no tint and then when I picked it up with tint I can say the tint makes a HUGE difference. Nothing in my car gets washed out with the tint while with the windows down or before it got tinted the speedo and NAV screen would get a little washed out...I noticed that during the test drive but was glad that it wasn't an issue once I picked the car up since it was tinted.

Thank goodness here in Ontario there is no real set law on tint.

Oh I think my car is like 30 on the front windows and 25 or something in the back...or the tint could be uniform all around at like 30 but it does seem the front windows are a tad lighter than the back/rear.. I really dont know other than it is nice and dark.

RL with 20% tint (photos)

Here are pics of my Celestial Silver RL, black leather, with 20% tint all around. This is illegal in Chicago (well, Illinois), but I had the same tint on my Mercedes E420 as well, for the last six years, and never was pulled over for the tint. However, when I was pulled over for speeding (twice) I dropped all four windows and turned-on all the interior lights in the car, so the officer could see in and not feel threatened.

Nice pics. Nice car, thanks for the view of the tints... I was thinking I am just going to go with 50%. If you don't mind me asking, what is it that is on your center console next to the shifter? Looks kind of like a phone maybe? Also, is that the V1 remote display above the "not an ashtray" unit?

Randy,

great pics!

After looking at your tint, I'd say mine could be 20% but maybe 25% or 30%...I doubt it is more than 30%

Yes, that's the Valentine One remote display, mounted right under the navigation controls, right above the "not an ashtray" unit. The detector itself is mounted at the highest point of the windshield, near the rearview mirror.

The thing you noticed on the center console is a magnetic cell phone holder. I bought it at the local cell phone shop for about $6. It mounts to the console with 3M adhesive tape, and then a quarter-sized magnet also gets adhered to the back of your cell phone. I loved in my previous car, so I bought one for the RL as well. I strictly only use the HFL system, but I love having my cell phone itself mounted in clear view, so I can use the display for caller ID (since the HFL only shows the number, not the names). I also run my cell phone charger cord up from the inside of the console power socket, up through the upper console storage area, and out to the phone, when it's sitting in the holder.

I found it online as well, if you want a photo or description:

Ohh thats cool. I never knew they had those.

I may ask you, after I buy the car, how/where you put the wires for the V1 remote display, I havn't had a chance to look at it, and I havn't seen the service manual yet to see if anything needs to come apart for that.

I couldn't tell you how they did it - - because I paid the Acura dealer $90 to do it for me.

I decided to go with the 35% all around. The guy said it would look great - and it does. Hopefully I can steal a digital cam from somebody tomorrow to take some pics. (painfully waiting for my camera to show up)

35% all around and $350 - I overpaid for the tint, no doubt.... but if I get a ticket, he will remove the tint and after the cop sees it,he will put the tint back on.

Tennessee's window tinting law.

55-9-107. Motor vehicle windows with tinting, reflecting or sun screen material.

(a) (1) It is unlawful for any person to operate, upon a public highway, street or road, any motor vehicle registered in this state, in which any window, which has a visible light transmittance equal to, but not less than, that specified in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205, has been altered, treated or replaced by the affixing, application or installation of any material which:

(A) Has a visible light transmittance of less than thirty-five percent (35%); or
(B) With the exception of the manufacturer's standard installed shade band, reduces the visible light transmittance in the windshield below seventy percent (70%).

(2) Any person who installs window tinting materials for profit, barter, or wages and/or commissions is defined as a "professional installer" for the provisions of this section, and it is unlawful for a professional installer to apply tinting materials to any vehicle so as to cause that vehicle to be in violation of this section.

(3) All professional installers of window tinting materials shall supply and shall affix to the lower right corner of the driver's window an adhesive label, the size and style of which shall be determined by the commissioner of safety, which includes:

(A) The installer's business name; and
(B) The legend "Complies with Tennessee Code Annotated, § 55-9-107."

(4) All professional installers of window tinting materials shall supply each customer with a signed receipt for each vehicle to which tinting materials have been applied which includes:

(A) Date of installation;
(B) Make, model, paint color and license plate number and state;
(C) The legend "Complies with Tennessee Code Annotated, § 55-9-107, at date of installation"; and
(D) The legend "This receipt shall be kept with vehicle registration documents."

(5) The owner of any vehicle in question has the burden of proof that such vehicle is in compliance with the provisions of this section.

(6) Any vehicle model permitted by federal regulations to be equipped with certain windows tinted so as not to conform to the specifications of subdivision (a)(1)(A) is exempt from subdivision (a)(1)(A) with respect to those certain windows. Likewise, vehicles bearing commercial license plates shall be exempt from the specifications of subdivision (a)(1)(A) for those windows rearward of the front doors. This subsection (a) shall not be construed in any way to exempt the front door windows of any vehicle of any kind from the specifications of subdivision (a)(1)(A).

(b) (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of subdivision (a)(1) to the contrary, any person with a medical condition that is adversely affected by ultraviolet light may submit a statement to the commissioner from that person's physician certifying that the person has a medical condition which requires reduction of light transmission in the windows of such person's vehicle in excess of the standards established in subsection (a). The commissioner shall submit the certified statement to the department's medical review board for evaluation. If the review board finds the exemption warranted, it shall recommend that the commissioner authorize the exemption, and the degree of tinting exemption which is appropriate. The commissioner shall then supply a certificate or decal, indicating the degree of exemption, to the applicant who shall display it in the motor vehicle.

(2) Any applicant aggrieved by a decision of the medical review board or the commissioner may appeal in accordance with the provisions of the Uniform Administrative Procedures Act, compiled in title 4, chapter 5. The appeal may be made to the chancery court of the county where the aggrieved applicant resides at the option of the applicant.

(c) It is probable cause for a full-time, salaried police officer of this state to detain a motor vehicle being operated on the public roads, streets or highways of this state when such officer has a reasonable belief that the motor vehicle is in violation of subdivision (a)(1), for the purpose of conducting a field comparison test.

(d) It is a Class C misdemeanor for the operator of a motor vehicle to refuse to submit to the field comparison test when directed to do so by a full-time, salaried police officer, or for any person to otherwise violate any provisions of this section.

(e) The commissioner of safety shall establish a standardized method and procedure by which law enforcement officers can readily, and with reasonable accuracy, conduct a field comparison test to determine if a motor vehicle's windows are in compliance with this section.
