Well, its finally done. After 3 long years of planning and talking about it, the 1st Turboed RL in North America hit the streets!
Ever since my TSX i would always dream of having an AWD turbo car from Honda! And now the dream has finally come through!
What an exhilarating feeling. I can't begin to thank the creator of it all. The imagination, the measuring, the calculations and the installation, all done by Charles himself from BMG Performance.
I got the quick working team Mathieu and Steve from ADVANCE EFI to install the FIC and tune the RL for her first run at 320 whp.
We started off with a completely stock 2005 Acura RL SH AWD.
Parts list included-
Garrett GTX3071R
AEM FIC
AEM 340lph Fuel Pump
Injector Dynamics 725cc
Same side in out Intercooler
Intercooler Piping
12" Slim Fans
Rev9 S2000 Radiator
External 9 Row Transmission Cooler
Inline oil filter for turbo
44mm Rev9 External Wastegate
Rev9 RS Series 2 BOV
Custom 19 bend downpipe
Custom 3" turbo back with Magnaflow resonators
Wow nice job! What psi are you running and what fuel? Any vids?
The car was tuned on 94 (Petro Canada) and 5psi of boost. The wastegate i ordered from REV9POWER.com through (Auto Ace), came with a 5lb, 10lb and 13lb spring. The tuners weren't convince the tranny would be able to hold the 10psi, so were staying safe for now.
Like last year, the car will be doing a 10,000+ KM road trip from Montreal, Canada to Las Vegas for the SEMA Show and then California and back Thats mainly the reason why were are trying to keep the set up as safe as possible especially since there's no support online from past builds.
Ok, so you are looking for more than 300 hp ! but nice job .
There's a member who did a RL Turbo in Russia. He was able to push 393 WHP on the dyno on a smaller turbo. Im not sure what PSI he was boosting, but it was definetly not above 10. I was originally hoping to do 400-420 whp. Well see what tweaks we can make when we come back from Vegas. Plans for this winter is a manual 6spd SH AWD.
Need more pics and stats. Do you have a DYNO sheet? Have you run a 1/4 mile?
Euther way, great work, but this is just a tease.
Dyno sheet will be posted when i can find it. haha! i took it down the 1/4 mile this weekend. Best time on 2 runs was a 14.4 trapping at 105 MPH
Its alright. My H22 Accord ran 14.5, but it was definetly lighter. The RL is also running 20" wheels.
Since peak boost is only 5psi and vtec kicks in at 5500, the real power is felt in higher RPM. Off a dig in FWD (since my SH AWD is not connected) i loose the edge.
My partner, Charles from BMG Performance has an E39 M5.V8 RWD N/A - Dyno at 340 whp.
On a rolling start 80km/h-200km/h, we are almost even. He pulls a bit, but never more then a car length. On the 1/4mile it ran best time 12.7
So it shows how different things can affect the outcome.
I run Petro 94 as well, car loves that stuff. 5psi is a good idea with those long drives ahead!
Watching some of the 3rd gen TL turbo builds it seems that heat and detonation are big engine killers on the motors with the built in exhaust manifolds on the heads. Your piping looks nicely wrapped, but consider heat shielding or water/meth to add to the cooling. At 5psi you're probably fine, but keep it in mind if you up the boost.
Where did you get the intercooler? what size is the piping?
Also an 80-200 run is nuts! line up from a 20 roll.
Curious why you are not running the AWD also why not lower the vtec ? the vtec shift point and gearing in this car are horride it will fall out of vtec on every shift.
Dammit. You beat me to be the first turbo rl in N/A. Ive been building mine for a while. Im still habing issues with some of the piping. (Everything is being done by me no shop to help) and turbo placement. But once i finish ill be the only Turbo RL in the good ol' USA.
Next summer we should do some runs at napierville or some highway roll ons .
Turbo RL vs Super Charged RL
Dam that sounds like a great race right there ! But I’m looking at weather I should turbo charge my RL or Super charge it , so this would be very interesting.
