Theory on Accord Comparisons
I had an observation today that I thought I would share....
I bet that if there were more RL's on the road... they would be more 'recognizable'. For instance, I see sooo many E's that they're instantly recognizable as a MB. But.. I usually have to get a little better look at the headlights to see if it's a C or E.
The reason people see the Accord in the RL is because there are a million Accords on the road... so your mind automatically groups them together.
What made me think of this is... someone mispelled the word "Physician" on a billboard in town. They spelt it, "Physican". I have looked at that sign a million times but would have never picked it up until someone pointed it out to me. Because my mind just saw the word and filled in the blanks. I think RL's are so rare, that our minds fill in the blanks with "Accord"!
Just a thought...

People will pay attention to what they care about and generalize things they care less about.
If they care not for Acura, they will generalize with something commonly known. And yes, I agree, the Accord is the appliance of automobiles (along with Camry).
If they care about Acura, they will know of the RL. But testimony to Acura's lame marketing, many of us who ARE Acura fans did not 'find' the RL until we began our own discovery.
Franky, I cannot tell the difference between Volvo, Saab and even some Mercedes models. I think they have much more family resemblances than do an Accord and RL. The people that make these generalizations between the Accord and RL either have no affinity to the brand or are posing a 'sour grapes' comparison between the two.
IMHO, the RL is true to the anecdote "Beauty is more than skin deep". In the RLs case that means a plethora of things, such as aluminium structure components, SHAWD, detailed assembly, and character that rewards with refinement instead of flash.

You have a point. Those who care about Lexuses know about the ES, but those who don't might compare it to the Camry. However, Toyota has spent a lot more resources making sure the Lexus brand is well known so people are less likely to compare those two cars.
