One of my front calipers locks up slightly sometimes...
A few times now the right front caliper will lock up slightly. I can hear it thumping louder and louder as I increase speed. After a few stops it will let go. I recently installed new pads and rotors. I didn't notice the pistons sticking then but it appears that one or more of the pistons are sticking now.
Should I rebuild my existing caliper or just get a remanufactured one from Advance Auto Parts? https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...461%7CL3*15684 |
Bump.
Someone here most of had to replace or rebuild a front caliper? |
Why do you need approval to do either? Do you know how to rebuild one? If not, buy from auto store. If you wanna spend time rebuilding, do that. I don't see what you are asking here?

it's literally up to you.
Do you want to rebuild or have the skills to rebuild the caliper? follow the flow chart...if yes......... if no....buy remanufactured. |

A reman kit with all 4 pistons is more expensive than a reman caliper. The pics of the remans I've found online don't show the front of the caliper. I don't know if it says Acura or if it is blank. That would help me decide what to do. I don't want to have a caliper that doesn't match. |
Is your car a Type-S or a Manual? Google is your friend!

Forgot I wasn't in the 3G TL page. I sure Google would have found the correct answer. Most Remans don't have logos.

OP have you rebuilt a brake caliper before? if not then I suggest you to buy reman caliper. If you did rebuilt them before don't let the 4 piston scare you, they are much easier to rebuilt than 1 and 2 piston caliper type.

You can purchase the pistons via Centric, they are pretty good quality parts.
|
While you are rebuilding the caliper, that's also a good time to through on some pain if you ever thought about painting the calipers.

I will look into that. I have used Centric rotors and I have had good luck with them.
Believe or not I kinda surprise about their "reman" caliper as you can see a picture below is a pair of Brembo caliper for my TL-S that indicate by centric as "reman". Yes the back of the caliper has "Brembo" cast on the caliper itself. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...bee5baa5dd.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/acurazi...c65d74df6b.jpg |
One of my front Advics calipers was getting stuck last year. I just took the caliper off, pads out, etc and gave it a good cleaning. I lubricated the pistons/seals with pure silicone to avoid any issue with the rubber. Worked like a charm. The pistons had been gunked up pretty bad. Bled the brakes while I was at it.
If you're looking for decent used Advics, check this site: https://ahparts.com/ these guys are still getting in 2nd generation RL parts. I wish the RL had Brembo's. Parts are so readily available. Still pricey... |
I still haven't done anything with the front right caliper. It hasn't locked up again since I started this thread. When I have some time I will break the caliper apart and give it a good cleaning. Maybe that is all it needs.
