New '05 RL Owner - Nav Update Questions

Just bought a new to me 2005 Acura RL - Actually it's in the shop currently for the doors locking randomly before I take it off the lot - the key cylinder on the drivers door was throwing an error, so let's hope that fixes it!

My real question is about the nav. It has v 4.13b currently, and I'm wondering if I can go DIRECTLY to 4.63 without any issues, or if I NEED to goto 4.3 first? Also, does a backup for 4.63 still work? I thought I saw that the backups stopped working around 4.73.

Any help would be appreciated!

It has been a long time since 4.63 came out. Best to just get 4.92 and be done with it.

My recollection is that 4.13 needs a incremental updates to work before you get to 4.63, although I believe the last stable release was 4.64. 4.63 was shipped with cars like the new TSX but not sure how it worked with the RL...search around here, and you will find the answer.

So to answer your question, you need to update 4.13 with 4.3x, then 4.5x and then 4.6x. I recall that going from 4.13 to 4.6x locked up the navi system. Going from 4.3x to 4.6x sometimes worked and sometimes did not, often leaving you hanging in the diagnostics menu. 4.5x to 4.6x worked. 4.6x had significant firmware updates.

Read all about here and with the update notes on AcuraNavi.com

I think that 4.7x, 4.8x or 4.9x comes with a second update disk.

Disclaimer, this is all dredging up old memories, but I think it pretty accurate.

As I recall

I too have an 05 and yes you can upgrade to the newest version without having any problems. Just be certain to order the 05 discs, there's a difference (it comes with two discs, one to update the firmware and the other for the maps).

Be advised, you'll lose the male navigation voice. Apparently they need more room for maps, etc. You'll have some new features, like coffee shops, etc.

I've never had any luck with using backups, even will all the "right" DVD brands, software, etc.

Good luck.

Well, I see that Chas2 and I responded about the same time but with quite different answers. He's normally very accurate, but I disagree with having to upgrade incrementally. As he recommends, check with the below listed site. Make certain you choose the 05 model. Here's a quote, "Will an update DVD be compatible with my vehicle? Yes. The latest version DVD will work in any Acura vehicle with white-labeled DVD."

If my memory serves me, there is an incremental update that is required moving from the original 2005 software to any of the newer versions (within the last few years). Buying from the link above includes both discs; a system update and 2011 map update. I purchased the new version last December for $100, but it did not include the system update necessary for 2005s. I was lucky enough to find a member from the board to send me the update.

If you're purchasing the disc from the link white05rl posted, you will get all that you need. For me, it was well worth it because the streets in my town are now listed on the maps!!

You definitely need the update disk to make that jump.

The reason I recall incremental updates is because the OP wanted to go to 4.63, and not the later updates where the update disk was included. In the 4.6x series, for official AcuraNaviUpdate.com purposes, 4.64 was the first stable update, and it was only on sale for about a month before 4.71 came out, and was offered at a reduced rate for several months as an apology to those that waited over a year for a stable 4.6x update.

I believe I was one of the first on this board to receive 4.62, and updated directly from 4.3x (can't remember which one, I think it was 4.31c).

Sorry about the long, defensive post, but as usual, as you think about things overnight, the details start coming back to you. No offense meant, and I hope none taken.....

I had a few problems and had to go to the dealer because my nav system got hung up in the diagnostics screen and something happened to the mic levels where the voice recognition would not pick up anything unless I yelled at the top of my lungs. Others that tried the 4.62 update were totally hung up, just rebooting constantly.

In the end, we 4.1x owners had the complete hang up, 4.5x owners seemed to have no issues, and some 4.3x owners had no issues either going to 4.62 or had hang ups similar to mine or less... Shortly afterwards, within 30 days, 4.62 was pulled off the market. 4.63 came out with new cars, 2G TSX, RDX and MDX sold that year but was never offered to the general public through AcuraNaviUpdate. Some reported 4.63 worked fine, but I don't recall what they were upgrading from. And how they got the disk was through happening to buy another car or some other way you probably did not want to admit to in writing.

Those with 4.1x that had no issues went through incremental updates, 4.1x => 4.3x => 4.5x => 4.6x

Newer updates, 4.8x and 4.9x had the 2nd DVD update disk that would handle 4.1x updates forward. I cannot remember about 4.7x

So long story short, if the OP is updating from 4.1x to 4.63 directly, I think he will have some trouble. I hope not, but that is what I recall from when I bought the short lived 4.62 which mostly worked for me.

BTW, the dealer fixed my mic level issue for free, it was just some sort of level calibration issue, and then I ran on 4.62 for about a year until they came up with that reduced price deal on 4.7x.
