Lexus GS changes?
First off, let me say that this is a discussion posting, I'm not trying to criticize any brand/make/model, ok? I own a 1997 Mercedes E420 and I'm looking to replace it with either an RL or an Infiniti M (didn't care for the underpowered GS300 and can't afford the GS430).
I could be completely wrong on this, but, I was thinking about the new Lexus GS and how the 245-HP V6 in particular is being criticized so heavily, especially since you get 280HP in an Avalon.
The new IS350 comes out this fall, with a 3.5 liter V6 making "more than 300 horsepower and making it to 60 in under 6 seconds" according to the Lexus preview website.
I would think that Lexus will move that same 300-HP V6 into a "GS350", dumping both the GS300 and GS430, once the GS450 comes online next spring. That way, Lexus would give themselves the power advantage over other brands, at least in numbers.
Anyone else think that might happen? If it does, it will be interesting to see how other brands respond. Gotta love horsepower wars.

Yeah I think they will have to do something with the GS300 seeing as it is underpowered compared to the two models you mention. It'd be odd if they didn't tweak the GS with the new IS350 coming out...
I think your speculation would make sense.

I think so. I'd expect that new motor will be put into the new model of GS soon. However, I got no idea why Lexus likes to promote that GS300 for now. If GS of 2007 get the huge boost of power, those '06 owners would cry.

I, too, noticed how magazines are complaining that the GS300 is a dog when climbing hills, though I'm guessing the RL isn't too much better. Of course, all of the mags are putting the RL against V8 competitors, and for them to whine very little about the RL's shorter supply of power is quite a statement. When the GS gets a bump up in power, I bet we see the RL getting some more torque and HP (but that's pretty much a given).
BTW, how's the E420 treating you? How has it treated you in the past? Would you recommend getting an extended warranty for any Mercedes product? Have you thought about an E500 or E350? Are you pursuing a Lexus or Acura because of reliability issues?

Lexus will not upgrade the engines after one year. It is cemented that the change will occur after two model years. The upgrade as stated by the company is intended to keep the car fresh (like BMW). They won't screw over first year buyers.
Yes the IS and Avalon put out more horsepower, but Toyota/Lexus thorougly planned out this lineup.

Apparently, they couldn't get the 3.5 GR in the GS application to pass the emissions standards in California in time, the most important state for Lexus sales. That's why the Japan got the GS350 and the US got GS300. It's odd, because the GR engine is pretty clean, but it was reported by this guy in Japan who seemed to be in the "inside".
Apparently, it's all worked out now, and the GS350 is coming in fall 2006 as a 2007 model.
Of course, none of this is official though.

If this can be true...
