Extended Warranty - worth it or not worth it?

Hey guys,

Did you get it an extended warranty? Or it is not worth it?

Our 01 MDX needs a new tranny and I don't have an extended warranty. It makes me think about the RL, especially with all the high tech gadgets in the car. I guess there is a correlation on how long one keeps the car, eh?

If you will own the car for 6+ years, buy the extended warranty. The possibilities of an electricall issue with the car far outweighs that of a mechanical issue. Unfortunate that you have a tranny problem w/ your MDX, but nowadays I'd strongly recommend the extended warranty to cover electrical issues (that most likely results in mechanical problems).

I got the 5 yr 100,000 Acura warranty. I figure it can easily pay for itself if 1 thing goes wrong. I have 5,200 miles on my car after 2 months & 3 days.

I felt the same way you do. The dealer wanted such an insane price that I didn't even counter-offer. Take a look at www.curryacuracare.com and if you like what you see, contact Dave Heffernan. I bought the same 8 year / 120k mile / $0 deductible Acura factory warrantee for $1680.

I have the 7 yr/100k mile warranty on my 01 MDX, and it has covered two NAVI units, a NAVI display and a rear seat latch problem. Still have about 4,500 miles left on the warranty, so I plan to get the tranny checked out before it expires.

When I purchased my 06 RL, my dealer only offered an extended warranty from some Florida company which was only 100k/7 yr/100 deductible and it COST $2,300! The dealer said that "this company is easier for our service department to work with". This contract was terrible, and requires pre-authorization if you take it to another dealer, even another Acura dealer. So I immediately cancelled it and shopped around for the AcuraCare contract. The online prices are good, but I found a local dealer that sold me the 8 yr/120k mile/0 deductible for $1,595.

With all the high tech equipment on the RL, I think the extended warranty is worthwhile. Remember that you have up to 6,000 miles to purchase it, and can shop around. It is amazing how much less dealers will quote you on this in a competitive situation versus when you are closing on the vehicle and they are trying to sell you all the extra protection junk.

Put it this way....

I asked myself the same question a couple years ago when I plunked down $1,400 on a 7yr/100K warranty on my then new Landcruiser.

Since then the navigation screen went bad. There was a TSB (not a recall) out on it, but I had since passed the mileage for the factory warranty (45K miles). 3yr/36K mile bumper to bumper & 5yr/60K powertrain. Like many vehicles with Nav, the screen was the interface to not only the navigation system, but also the HVAC, audio, back-up camera, etc. The cost of the part alone was $5,000!!!! Covered by the extended warranty.

I then had some issues with the headunit and bluetooth. When using the BT, the stereo wouldn't "unmute" after the call. Required replacing the headunit ($800).

So I would say I got my money's worth out of my $1,400 extended warranty.

As a result, it was a no-brainer when I purchased my RL given the complexity and sophistication of the vehicle.

Plus, keep in mind that IF you don't use your extended warranty & you trade your car in before it is up you will get a refund. I recently got a $732 refund on my TSX extended warranty (Acura care) when I traded it in on my now RL. And, my F&I guy at the dealership told me (I have it in writing) that Acura now refunds 100% if it is not used when you trade in.

miner - do you know if the "refund" applies to selling the car "privately" and not trading it in to Acura?

Thanks!

I beleive once you sell the car, inform Acura with a mileage statement and you should be set to go fro a refund.

Think about it this way. If you nav unit dies at 53k, when you find out it will cost more than $5000 to replace it are you going to fix it?

Another endorsement for Dave. I covered my Accord, MDX and RL with him, saving thousands. When I sold the accord and bought the RL, Dave cashed in the old and wrote me a new policy. Very friendly, very honest guy.

Take a look at Ray Laks their internet division. I just bought the the 8yr/100k $0 ded Acura Care for $1335. Everything went through flawlessly. I looked at both Curry and Ray and Ray is ~$100 less even with discount from curry.

PM me if you want more info. I checked out the validity. I just gotta endorse Ray Laks becuase the dealer from whom I bought the car offered me initially $2800 and then went down to $1800 but no lower. That was ridiculous.

Question

When you purchase of new RL and then purchase an 8 year/120k warranty,,,on a new car, aren't you really buying 4 years?,,,ie paying for 8 and getting only 4?,,,the first 4 are covered by Acura anyway?,,,

I can see the extended warranty, just not a purchase on a new car,,,later, say the 3rd year of ownership?,,,

You're really buying it for the mileage. You have to evaluate your annual mileage and pick the combination that gies you maximum prote tion.

If you don't put a lot of miles, you're more interested in the years as opposed to the mileage. If you are a high mileage driver, it's the miles you want more of.

You are correct, it's inclusive of the factory warrantee, so with the 8 yr / 120k / $0 ded, you're actually buying an additional 4 yrs / 70k overall and 2 yrs / 50k on the drivetrain. Not to mention that you're paying this in full on day one, when it actually kicks in year five, so they get to use your money for four years before you could ever lodge a claim against the extended warrantee. Don't know about Acura, but some factory plans rise in price as time goes on, even if the vehicle is still under warrantee. I've seen other stop offering the largest plans (in years and/or mileage) after the first year. Of course, the price could go up (or down) as time goes on. Regardless, we keep vehicles a long time and I'd just as soon buy it now.

Honda has been very good about replacing the trans and I think there is a silent warranty up to about 100k. Also a Class Action Suit was just finished and the 01 MDX is included, see the top of the TL forum for a link.

If you decide on the warranty, check out Ray Laks as others have said. The price does go up as time/mileage goes up with the factory sponsored warranty.

I got mine!

I went ahead and bought an 8 yr/120K $0 deductible from the dealer I bought the RL from. I went there with a printout from hondaacuraworld.com and they matched it dollar per dollar. I found out they made $100 over cost. The total cost of the extended warranty was $1,585. The good thing is the dealer only asked for 10% down and the rest of the balance is spread up to 18 months with NO interest. No special financing....instead they will charge my credit card on a monthly basis. Now I can rest easy for at least the next 8 years or 120K whichever comes first.

Good for you! Money well spent. Computers are not designed to take the punishment they are put through in cars (whether motion or varying degrees of temperature). Mechanically you should be OK. But the odds are too great that you will be using that extended warranty to repair/replace an electronic component.

Got mine from hondaacuraworld.com already the next day after and already received the paperwork from Honda Corp. It only took 1.5 weeks to be done.

Does anyone know if the Acuracare warranty actually covers the front end. Torn boots or replacement of control arms. The extended warranty I had for my Audi did not cover those parts and they cost me a fortune (3 or 4 sets on each side of upper control arms and boots).

My dealer, when trying to sell me the extended warranty, told me that it covers those components but for some reason I don't believe finance guys.

I think I will definitely buy the extended warranty form hondaacuraworld if they really do cover those components.

I finally called Honda last week to check and was told the extended warranty was in place. They are mailing me another set of paperwork, which she said will take about two weeks.

For example if the boots crack or prematuraly wear, I would imagine it's covered, but if they are cut due to you running over an object in the road, probably not.

I called www.hondacareextendedwarranty.com (Bob Leab) and he said that those components are covered except in an accident. So I just ordered a 7yr 120k extended warranty (Acura Care) for the lowest price that I could find of $1285 with 0 deductible. I chose them because they were about $15 less than hondaacuraworld.com when you put it on the credit card for 12 equal payments. They had a $35 activation fee versus hondaacuraworlds $50 activation fee.

So I hope I made the right decision in basically purchasing 3 years and 70k miles bumper to bumper from the original Manufac warranty. Funny that a new Ford costs about 2 grand for an extended with less miles.

Cause there is a greater possibility that the Ford Warranty will pay out more often.

Thumbs up on a GREAT decision but for different reasoning: Mechanically, 98% of cars made since about 1985 are sound. But also since 1985, when computers and various electronic gizmos started becoming the 'norm' inside cars, it is these items that require attention when out of warranty. Ask any service technician at any dealership (or established repair shop) and 90% will say the majority of service repairs are electrical. Odds are in favor you will need (or should I realistically say 'use') that extended warranty for an electrical issue before mechanical (or suspension related) concern.

I'm just shy of 6000 miles and ready to purchase extended warranty coverage. I checked with hondacareextendedwarranty about the refund if not used. Interestingly, their reply indicated the policy is not refundable if unused. Does this change based who the extended coverage is purchased?

Silly question. I spoke to Ray Laks and they told me if I get an extended warranty for my RL, I have a 05 RL with 28,000 miles now (Acura mfr warranty is 4yr/50K), its added onto the initial warranty.

Is that true? for example, if I get the 6 year, 84K warranty, they are saying its 10 years/ 134K, I assumed it was 6yr/84K prorated.

Does anybody have experience with this? Thanks in advance.

The extended warranty starts the day you purchase it. For example, if you purchase it today; then you have 56k more miles (84k-28k) covered or until 2011 (6 years from today). Whatever comes first.
