^depends on the condition of your "future" RL.
if previous owner didnt maintain the car, you'll have a lot of "fun" fixing it up.
however; if you find a mint condition 08...tires, oil and gas is all you need. maybe a new battery.
I have a paid off 2006 TL and other than tires, it's like less than $1000 per year to maintain

^+1 and your budget. If your looking for a 5k 08 RL you get what you pay for. The maintenance for your e38 shouldnt be very different from RL. What are you experiencing in e38 that you hope to avoid in RL other than cooling system? Do you turn your own wrenches, that will help reduce costs? I have an e39 and e53 and while theyre not my DD's after the initial baselining theres not much regular other than oil.
I think there was a known issues thread on RL. Id review that and see if anything on there maps to what your experiencing on the e38.

I've had my '06 since early July, I've owned nothing but GM cars since I've been driving and I'll admit I was weary of trying another brand. I've put like 5k on my RL from road tripping and daily driving in the couple months I've had it and its been very impressive so far, love this car. Like any other car with age you may have to replace normal wear and tear items like belts, fluids, maybe some suspension components etc., other than that it should be a good.

Generally it's a much more solid car than a bmw. Buy a clean one, take care of it. You'll spend nothing more than gas and oil for a long time.
