Back up camera yes or no

Yes I have done some searching in this forum. I found one thread that got pretty deep and will probably have to return to it. I just spent a lot of time on Youtube looking at wireless back up cameras as well but honestly I dont want to clutter up my dash area when I already have a big video screen.

My yes or no question is......
I have a 2006 RL which is new to me. Is it possible to purchase a back up camera and install it on my license plate and then have the picture show on my existing map/nav screen in the car when the car is put into reverse?

If so what has been the best product to date that has been used?

Thanks!!!

I just got a 2005 RL and have the same question. I don’t want to add a backup camera unless it can integrate with the car’s existing screen, and I’d like to hear from someone that’s added one before shopping for one.

Understood, however, I did try searches and am not finding information specific to adding a backup camera to a 2005 RL. If a thread exists, maybe someone could point me to that.

So I'm getting better at searching. Looks like the '05 RL would need a '06 DVD drive swap to use the existing screen. That's disappointing; I'm not sure I want one that bad. I'll stop commenting on this duplicate thread now, thanks for everyone's understanding.

So you are telling us, you could not find anything specific to that exact year, or do you want the color and wheel package to match too? ahaha

There is some light reading on the 05 topic.

It took me longer to copy/paste than it did to search.

The easiest way to install a back up camera in the 2005, or 2005-2008 appears to be to install NAVTOOLS and use their inputs in terms of integration.

I spoke with a local car stereo electronics shop today......they said the 06RL would be a very easy and inexpensive install. He gave me a rough quote of $300....... I will prob negotiate down to $250 and let him do it. His costs for camera and interface are prob nothing...like less then $50.....but an hour of labor and he is a brick and mortar store and has to keep the lights on so I think its a fair deal.

I have an '06 RL and I had an Acura factory kit installed a long time ago. The camera location replaces the open-the-trunk button on the underside of the chrome strip above the license plate, and the button gets relocated about six inches to the right. Is this part now unavailable?

You can do that with NavTools. Use any camera you like, very simple instal. You can even run Apple Carplay if you get the expensive unit. Navtools acts as seperate Video Output.

So is it a total waste of money to pay $300 for an install? I am handy and can yank the stereo out but have never even heard of NAV tools.

NavTools seems reputable. They've been referenced on this board for years.
