Acura RL "Check starting system"

I have a 2005 RL with 85k miles that is giving me issues at times starting the vehicle. For example, I drove to the store a few days ago and shut the vehicle off for roughly 10-15 minutes, when I got back in the car and attempted to start it, it would not turn over or click or even attempt to start it would just show "check starting system"...I then was told to put the car in neutral and attempt to start it, and she started up normally .... A few days later, It happened again, and I rocked the vehicle back and forth while in the passenger seat, and then it started right up!...I'm puzzled on what to replace next since the starter was replaced about 3-4 months ago...any info is greatly appreciated!

I would take the car to autozone or advance auto and get a battery test, it's free and it checks the starter, alternator and battery. It may help rule a few things out. If you turn the key and get nothing, it's likely a starter problem, they can be flaky, possibly a bad solenoid. Other than that, you have a few other things to start checking, including relays and wiring.

I'm dealing with an intermittent starting issue too and can't pin it down. I have a thread on it. Mine cranks, but won't turn over, turn it off, try again and it starts. Starting to do it more frequently. I need to check my ground connections, there are four that relate to the starter. Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight.

Hey guys when this happens !

Take your car from P to D . The shift position sensor on the tranny I've been seeing are wearing out .

Make sure your P is lite up on your gauge cluster .

This happened to me twice now !

Quite possibly. We recently had a member who couldn't always turn the car off because the shifter wasn't sensing "P".

Thanks for the info! 2 different mechanics @acura dealership told me they believe it is the neutral safety switch that needs to be replaced! I purchased the oem part for $75 and will be replacing it over the weekend! Thanks again!

This is different from the issue some and I are having that happens very rarely for me. It cranks over but will not fire up. When it happens, I just turn it off, calm down and wait a bit, then try again and it starts. But eventually it will not fire up I think. But maybe not. I think for me, better to wait till it's totally dead and then have it diagnosed then spending money to diagnose an intermittent problem. Any mechanic will tell you those are the hardest to nail down. I read on here it might be a fuel pump relay. That's cheap enough to swap out, but I didn't bother when the poster said it didn't help. This is frustrating. We want to keep and trust our old Hondas, but it was this reason that a month ago when we needed to replace my wife's car (2004 Honda Pilot), we just bought a NEW CR-V. It's new and nice and tight, but my fellow RL owners here will agree that it's an econobox, and very unrefined compared to that. What am I going to do when I have to replace my RL? I want something similar, but am looking new. Today I was enjoying the 10 speaker surround with a DTS CD. A new Accord won't have that, not even an EX-L. And I'm not spending $30K on an Accord. No way, no day! It would be a base model or maybe the Sport model. That said, they've come a long way since the 2005 model year that my RL is, and look quite elegant.
