2007 RL Help me figure out this noise
I have a 2007 RL and it just started making a kind of howling noise about a week ago. I used to have a 2005 that had the propeller shaft whine and this sounds nothing like it. It starts around 40 and sounds more like a howling noise. I have tried turning left and right to put pressure on it to see if it is a wheel bearing and that didn’t stop the noise. I am at a loss on this one I am probably going to take it to the dealer next week if I don’t get any insight on here.

Burning Brakes
Sound coming from any one area in particular? Is it affected by temperature change? Tried turning on and off the climate control and/or A/C system? Checked under the hood to make sure that a belt hasn't slipped?

OP you have not given your audience enough information to help you so we may only assume that it is coming from somewhere between the bumpers.
Turn everything off, test again and give us some info as to direction etc.

Does it make the noise at a standstill?
if not, then I think you can rule out an engine or related issue.
If it makes the noise at a standstill then you have an issue under the hood.
I'm going to assume you mean it makes a noise with the car in motion.
Does the noise change as you go faster? Does it change as you go through the gears?
Again, assuming the noise changes as you go faster and does not change as you go through the gears.
You will most likely find an issue with a wheel bearing but you shouldn't ignore the rear housing. Have you checked/replaced fluids?
What do the rotors and pads look like? Do you have an emergency brake dragging?

Here is what I know so far.
· It doesn’t do it when the car is cold. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
· Turning the climate control off/on doesn’t affect the noise.
· Turning left or right doesn’t affect the noise.
· Putting the car in neutral when it is making the noise has no affect.
· The noise only happens when the car is moving. Revving the engine in neutral has no affect.
· The noise comes in around 40 MPH and last until about 60 MPH.
· Once you get the noise started around 40 MPH and you slow down it will follow until about 20 MPH. The noise will not start at 20 MPH from a dead start.
· The car has 102,000 on it.
· I am due for timing belt service and the dealer thinks it is a tensioner. If it is a tensioner wouldn’t putting it in neutral make the noise go away when the RPM’s drop?

Find a new dealer...... If the noise doesn't present itself unless the car is moving I can't understand how it could be in the motor.

I believe it is the lockup torque converter. You usually hear a whirring that tends to be around 30-40 mph and then it will go quiet. There are threads on this but you would have to search. I really do not think it is the tensioner because you hear that on startup and when accelerating but it is more metal to metal sounding. I hope this helps.
