2005 RL Glovebox

I'm sure there's a thread already out there, but I'm trying to get the most up to date info. My son has a 2005 RL and the glovebox is roached. It's got bubbles and indentations all in it. Is buying a replacement glovebox the only answer or is there a way to strip it down and recover it? Thanks in advance !

PLenty of threads on that here.... I am in the same boat. Used ones in good condition are hard to find, but recovering at a local upholsterer is an option as well.

Yes, we have looked too and the ones we are finding all have some kind of flaw. I'll call a few shops and get some prices and post them here. Thanks for the response.

Have you tried car-parts.com as an option? These are parts from salvage vehicles, check for place near you or that will ship. Ive been fairly successful with this site for multiple brands.

You go to Walmart and by two yards fake leather to cover it. Must remove the glove box and take it apart to cover it over. Done it took two tries for me.

Thanks for the reply. I just checked it out and I found one in tan, but not in grey. I'll keep it my favorites as I have a TL that might need something down the road too.

Yes, we have considered covering it, but I was hoping there would be a way to strip that old stuff off and spray it with some kind of a color match product. Thanks for the reply.

As they said, hard to find the part because lots of them have deteriorated. My suspicion is that the part supplier cheaped out and put too little UV inhibitor in the plastic, causing it to deteriorate premature when exposed to sunlight. The upholstery shop option sounds like the most feasible and least time-wasting one to me if you don't immediately get lucky sourcing the part (and if someone says they have it, have them send you a snapshot of that upper surface).

Thanks

I think we’re going to check out the upholstery shop option. It might be pricey, but he plans on keeping this car and looks do matter when it comes to these kinds of things.

can you post a pic of the glovebox? I want to do mine but need to see how others did it, if it doesn't look great then I will take it to an upholstery place when non essential businesses are open.

I believe it is a flaw with this vehicle. unbelievable, never seen anything like it. The glovebox door are so expensive. Definitely not real leather!! I know you can replace the glove box door. I haven't found one nor have I wanted to invest $$ in one. Most of the upholstery shops have said to get a new glovebox door, they can't repair it.
You may be able to put a matte or carbon fiber wrap/cover on it.

The bubbles on mine look like it's ostrich leather.

I'm quite happy with that
