Acura Rear Bumper Applique (RDX)

Has anyone done DYI Acura Rear Bumper Applique (RDX)? Some who bought it wrote:

"Probably a great item to apply to protect your bumber, but the kit DOES NOT COME WITH the required 3M Protective Tape Application Solution. It's about $45.00 a quart and not too easy to find locally."

I live in northern, ca and would like to see if I could find a small amount of that 3M solution.

The rear bumper applique from Acura I thought was a self stick clear film. Many who have used it complained about seeing the fingerprints through the clear film after installation. Some people have used the black plastic bumper protector made for Subarus. I guess you would have to compare the size you need to either a Forrester, or an Impreza.

Just check the thickness to make sure it clears the hatch door.

This company makes the covers also:

You can make the solution. It's just water, alcohol, and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. I forget the exact amounts but you can google '3m solution' or something similar and find it. I made some up in a spray bottle and used it for the bumper applique and it worked just fine. Biggest problem I had with installation was getting the bubbles out, or actually, not getting them in.

I did it myself and very pleased with the outcome.

First you need to clean really well the area you are going to place the applique with a microfiber cloth and a solution of 75% water and 25% isopropyl alcohol.
Then you will pour two drops of clear baby shampoo Johnson (I bought a travel size bottle for $0.99) in a spray bottle half filled with water and mix it really well. This is going to be your tape solution.
Make sure you spray the shampoo solution all over the bumper, on your hands every 5 minutes and on the sticky part of the applique, so you will be able to adjust the applique if you need to.

And also follow the instructions, you won't find those in the OEM applique package.

I was about to do the appliqué this weekend but I seem to have mis placed the cloth and plastic applicator. Does anyone have any suggestions as to my options now?

The cloth you can buy at the dollar store, at the automotive aisle, make sure it's microfiber.
I will check tonight if I still have the applicator, in case I will send it to you.

Wasn't there an earlier post where someone used a generic protector from JC Whitney or someplace like that?

What's the consensus on this accessory? Worth the $90 from the dealer? Is the RDX logo really on the right side? It just seems a little asymmetrical and out of place. More photos would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone heard of Lamin-x? It's a fraction of the OEM price.

All of these are merely clear bra material. For my TSX, I bought a roll of the material at Autozone, cut it to size and applied it with the dish soap/alcohol mixture. Any old credit card or stiff plastic will work to get the bubbles out. Remember that small bubbles will go away in a few days. Using plastic gloves kept liberally wet with the solution will keep fingerprints at bay.

Lamin-X is precut which makes it easier. If ordering, then get the film for your headlights and fogs too.

I have it and it's a cheap but a useful mod. Helps protect the bumper from scuffs and scratches. Perfect if you have a dog or haul large items. I like the logo place to the size.

Lamin x works but the film isn't very thick.

Correct. It is a very useful mod - but - if you have a dog, then you'll want to get the cargo liner with the fold out flap in addition to this. The flap covers the hatch latch so the paws can't get cut or trapped.

Thanks. I'll skip saving the few bucks for something more thick and find a deal on an OEM.

Does any member have photos of the cargo liner in action? What's the quality like?

Rear Bumper

I had the bumper ledge clear 3m treatment. But--I had it draped over the edge a half inch. Too often these applications on cars go just to the edge, or even a bit shy of the edge. That makes no sense since it's the edge that will likely get the scrapes.

The oem bumper appliqué does cover the top and wrap around the edge about and inch or so down the back bumper.

Interesting--the Dealer was unaware of the wrap around down an inch. Surprise surprise.
