100,000 mile service check up
 

We have a 2015 RDX that has 105,000 miles on it. The dealer says that plugs, outer/serpentine belt, water pump and anti-freeze are due to be replaced. They are quoting around $1000.00 to do this as it is apparently very labor intensive to get to the belts and plugs. Has anyone had any kind of experience with this? That seems extremely expensive to replace mileage "limited" items when there is nothing wrong with them. I am leaning against doing this as it just seems like it's a revenue builder for the dealer. On the other hand, it's my wife's car and she commutes in it every day.

at 105k miles, there is a timing belt service.
it can range in price anywhere from $400-1700

timing belt service includes;
-timing belt
-water pump
- tensioners
- can include spark plugs.
- and you'll need to refill it with coolant.

if you decide NOT to do it...the timing belt can snap and since the engine is an interference engine, the pistons WILL hit the valves in the heads...engine failure

So I specifically asked about the timing belt. He said there is no timing belt, which sounded odd to me. I understand what happens when a timing belt breaks. He said it was the outer belts which is the serpentine belt was the only one that was supposed to be replaced.

2015 RDX is v6 and has a timing belt.
you need to skip that dealer and go to someone else who knows what they are talking about... especially since the 105k service is IMPORTANT

Spoke with the dealer again. He thought we had the 4 cylinder which has the chain. We agreed to replace the outer belts, timing belt, water pump and anti-freeze. He said the timing belt drives the water pump so it is best to do it now. Can't argue with that. Still, it's $900.

He said replacing the plugs is around $300. Has anyone replaced theirs on the V-6? How big of a job is it? I had him wait on that for now. I am planning on looking into it to see what PIA it may be.

the J-series engine has been around since 1996. the back row closest to the firewall is not as easy as the front, but with a swiveling socket + extention, you'll get them!

if you search youtube with key words "Honda/Acura spark plugs DIY" you'll find lots of DIY videos!!!

I've not had this service done on the RDX yet. Based on my experience with Hondas with timing belts, the charges seem about right. You can shave maybe $150 off by going to an independent shop, but it's often not worth it.

I had my spark plugs replaced at 60,000 miles, the dashboard lit up like a Xmas tree while on a road trip. Took it to the nearest dealer, $350, WTF I still don't understand how the spark plugs could fail at 60,000 miles.

maybe they werent bad. maybe they were.
While modern plugs are designed for 100k miles, it's not uncommon for a plug to go bad before the 105k mark, ie; it can happen

Yes I did look at them, if fact I took them with me. The only thing that was wrong is where the white insulator meets the metal shell they all looked burned, like they got really hot repeatedly. Dealer said it was normal, and probably from cheep gas, and Acura refused to cover the repair under the warranty, said it was a maintenance part.

I was going to say from poor fuel, but was giving the benefit of the doubt.
some say; they like to go with other types of plugs that only last 50k. they can check them every 50k for piece of mind, instead of waiting for the 100k mark. that way; if something does go wrong with the plugs, they can spot it early on

I understand the timing belt being needed with zero clearance v6 engine. But what else really needs to be replaced at 100k miles. 2015 has 86000 now called dealer to see what 100k service would be and cost. they said timing belt, idler wheels, water pump, belts, spark plugs, adjust valves. And get this $3200.

I didn't say anything but $3200 really if actually would cost that this will be first and last Acura ever get. It has been good vehicles but $3200 in service at 100k NO WAY.

I have seen some costs listed hear way less than that. I am in Minneapolis area. Any suggestions on who to take it to, what REALLY should be replaced and cost?

Yes that list is correct, although they left out the coolant replacement (genuine Honda long life blue only) You can price it at a Honda dealer, they will be in the $1200-1800 range. An independant Honda specialist might get you in and out for around a $1000. (less if you wait on the plugs-don't) If you do use anyone but a dealer, have them source a kit made by Aisin. That will get you OEM quality parts. Asin makes the OEM water pump. The spark plugs are extremely expensive as well, like $20. each. They can be had cheaper, but be careful of a really good deal. Buying them off ebay is a no no and there have been reports of fakes from Amazon as well. Rock Auto is a good place to buy this stuff.

Anyone in know good place to go with Acura for 100k Service? From prices I see in this thread my dealers quote of $3200 is totally out of wack.

I recently used a local shop to swap out the timing belt, water pump, pulleys, tensioner with Aisin kit, plus Acura coolant. That cost me $850. I replaced the spark plugs and drive belt myself and part cost set me back another $130 (yep, don't buy plugs from Amazon).

Other than the spark plugs, everything that came out looks to be in pristine condition. I live in sunny California with covered garage at home and work so it helps, but there is no doubt in my mind that they could have easily lasted another 50,000 miles.

If you plan to sell yours in a couple of years or so, one option is do nothing and make it next owner's problem to deal with.

Don't plan to sell but if did nothing you would be playing with Fire. If timing belt brakes can damage engine.

Yes it is playing with fire, but would not get "explosive" until 120k or so. The interval for this service, before there was a MID to display service codes, was 105k. I have had this engine
in a couple of Odysseys, and have been active on the OdyClub website. Timing belt breaking is quite rare. One member over there completely forgot and when he di do it at 190k, the belt was
fine. Actually, the tensioner would start ticking first probably. I just bought a 2016 RDX and asked about removing the aftermarket alarm at the selling dealer. I was quoted well over $200. an hour
service time, twice what a Honda dealer would be. My last timing belt on the Odyssey was about $850. at an independant shop.

We were quoted 2500 for this. Can somebody verify the price?

The price will depend entirely on the per hour rate the Acura dealer charges. You can use a Honda dealer for this for quite a bit less.
This engine is used in the Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, & MDX as well as the 2013-2018 RDX. So any competent mechanic can perform
this service. Just make sure Factory or Factory quality parts are used. See my post above on the Aisin kits. Aisin makes the water pump for Honda.

So broken down it looks like parts
timing belt - $980
valve adjustment - $340
V6 tune up (spark plugs) - $276

The rest is labor, approximately $1000

Adds up to about $2600 actually.

It is my opinion that that is outrageous. Price it out at a Honda dealer.

$2100 or so at the Honda dealer. Same parts!
