Opening in tailgate behind license plate

Have a 2017 Advance. Noticed an opening in the tailgate behind the license plate. What is it there for?

Thanks Altair for the photo. Just wondering why the openings are there? What function? Won't the openings allow road noise in

This is just a plastic cover for the metal trunk, it does not affect the noise. The main noise in 2G RDX enters through the single side windows, doors and floor. If you install complete soundproofing in the trunk lid, then you will not feel absolutely no difference.
