Oil life indicator mechanism

Hey All... Anyone know if the oil life indicator base on mileage or actually viscosity of the oil itself ?

here is a copy and paste for those that may be interested in knowing. It is basically timer / usage based rather than measuring actual oil quality (which might be an expensive solution).

The system counts down oil life based on engine operating conditions (both normal and severe). The on-board computer continuously monitors engine operating conditions such as speed, engine temperature, ambient temperature, time, and vehicle use to determine when an oil change and regular maintenance is necessary.
