1st post here. I've had my 2013 AWD base RDX just over a year now. Didn't feel the extra cost for the tech package was worth it for my needs (yea - I'm cheap). To date it's the best car I've ever owned, and I love just about everything about it - especially the drive. However, the lower fascia looks rather out of place without the fog lights on the base model. So, I was thinking about installing a kind of "faux" fog light in the circular recesses where the real ones are placed on the tech package. I don't need real fog lights where we live, so installing the package from Acura isn't an option (and I certainly don't like the expense). I was thinking a clear plastic lens with the interior sprayed black might look nice.
I was wondering if anyone's done a similar mod and if so, what they did?

 

Put a couple of convex mirrors in there. Then you can fool on coming traffic at night too.

I have a base RDX also and think putting fake "junk" on our nice car is unnecessary and will only make it look worse. I'd leave it as is.

 

To each their own, but I wouldn't add any fake stuff for the purpose of style. In fact, the fake grill mesh in front bugs me a bit.

Maybe you can add "real" fog or driving lights.

While I understand there are those who don't like the idea, perhaps those who don't like it can keep their comments to themselves.
As 'davisinla' states "to each their own."
As for the front fascia, it's plainly obvious that Acura designed it with fog lights in mind. Since they didn't offer an easy and affordable upgrade option to install fog lights, I'd like to modify MY RDX to suit MY desires.

 

^ he can put whatever he wants on his car but by the time you find a fake kit, you can pretty much get OEM stuff for not much more and it has the advantage of working.

 

The cost of the real fog light package is actually not bad.
I've looked at the DIY install procedure and changed my mind as the steering column disassemble just looked too scary.

 

Check out trailer tail light lenses, if they're the same diameter it might work for you if you don't mind the amber color lenses. I know someone who did that on his Dakota and he was happy with the look. JC Whitney catalog might be a good start.

 

Make sure that if you live in a state with state inspections like Virginia that your lights function properly and are road legal. In VA they used to fail people who had fog lights installed that did not work. I don't know the exact check but just make sure you don't set yourself up later.

 

You asked for the forums input and then you are not satisfied with the responses. If you didnt want to hear the others opinion, perhaps you should have not posted and solicited their input.

I think you can do whatever you want with your vehicle. You already stated that your are frugal, basically a cheap person who wants to be poser with fog light look but wont spend the money to buy the actual lights. It is your car so, do as you want with it. :2cents

 

What I didn't expect from an Acura forum were snarky responses. When I said I was cheap that was a bit tongue-in-cheek (I should think that was easily recognized as such). Now, in reality I think anyone who buys an Acura isn't really cheap. I also mentioned I didn't need real fog lights where I live, so adding them was a waste of money. All's I want to do is spruce up the front end a bit. Maybe my choice of the phrase 'faux fog lights' was incorrect???
In my years at a Durango (one of my other vehicles) forum I never experienced such responses. I would hope that Acura forum members would be at least as mature.

 

As I said previously, anyone is free to do whatever they want to their vehicle. I firmly believe in the “different strokes” philosophy. Perhaps JC Whitney has a product you could use.

Just my two cents, but in the future, if you want to limit the responses to your questions and ideas, I suggest that Internet forums are not the best venue in which to present them - perhaps simply asking good friends or family would decrease the chances of receiving negative responses.

You MUST have expected to get honest opinions by posting here, even if you didn’t approve of the answers. I don't disagree that "snarkiness" can be found throughout the Internet. But why not do what most others do – ignore the replies you don’t find valuable. Wouldn't that be more “mature” than trying to blame members for not giving you the answers you wanted in the manner you thought you deserved?

You know, to some people, asking what they think about adding fake stuff to a car and then complaining about the immaturity of their responses is a little bit contradictory.

I think the point that everyone was trying to make is that any "cheap" thing you try to do to make it look better will probably make it look worse and even tacky and they said it the way they did to try and shock you into reality. Take the tough love and quit whining. You said you were cheap twice so you probably are. Nothing wrong with that. I drive an Acura and I can be a little cheap sometimes. If you want it to look good spend the $500 as you'll get some it back in resale.

 

Two points - my "cheap" statement was identified as tongue-in-cheek as I don't think anyone who buys a new Acura could be considered cheap (as I stated above).
For the other point, I've seen "cheap" modifications to vehicles that look anything but tacky - so long as they're done correctly. In fact, I've personally seen some that look absolutely amazing (examples would be grille modifications).
As for tough love - I'm all for it when it matters. However, as I stated above, I expected a bit more maturity from an Acura forum - maturity that has been demonstrated on other forums where you wouldn't necessarily expect it.

 

In the end, davisinla is (unfortunately) right - the internet is full of snarkiness and garbage. I guess it's a reflection on how far society has fallen now-a-days.

 

Snarkiness and garbage preceded the Internet by thousands of years. IMHO, it's time you stop admonishing others by playing a philosophical victim, because from where I sit, it looks to me as though you've dealt out a bit of snarkiness yourself.

 

You could have totally ignored a couple of posts that didn't think much of your idea. You call that mature. I realize that you didn't ask people to give their opinion on your idea, you were just asking if anybody had did anything like it. You should understand that anytime you throw an idea out on the internet you're going to get opinions on it. If you don't like the comments, disregard. Nobody directed any personal insults toward you but you sure are acting like they were.

Welcome to the RDX forum! I wish you the best with your RDX. Please let us know what you decide to do about the fog lights. I actually like them on my current vehicle.
This is the second time you have mentioned the Acura not being cheap. There are different people on this forum in multiple prices points. Some of them will agree with your suggestions while others will diagree. It is not an attempt directly aimed at you. Typically the comments are directed to the emtire group. It is an avenue to share an opinion in a broad spectrum and see what the other response may be.

Post photos if you do make the change or update. I love to see other members vehicles.

To clarify, I mean Acura isn't necessarily cheap as a price point compared to most of the competition. Although, it's very affordable compared to other 'luxury' brands. And it's certainly not a 'cheap' product as far as quality is concerned! Best car I've ever owned by far. Great driving, quiet, comfortable, and very refined.
