Expanded-View Driver's Mirror
#2
Its been almost a year and still hate it! Some love them, but for, I like to use a regular mirror combined with looking over my shoulders.

I have had my RDX since May 2nd. I never use the "extended" mirror feature except when parked waiting for my wife to finish shopping. Not really "use", just trying to understand what the h.. it is good for. The RDX mirrors are big enough and with proper adjustment, there is no blind spot. The extended feature is worthless to me.

^^ I have a friend who drives a Ford Escape (older model) and it has a similar device but theirs is a bit better integrated compared to Acura. Acura tried to implement a "good" idea but did poorly at executing it. I drove my friend's Escape and I still disliked it there as well, but I will admit that it was better than on the RDX

To me it's worthless. An idea that was not well tested...in my mind. I don't even try to use it. I turn my head back as I always have, trusting my eyes rather than that ridiculous mirror!
Still love my RDX....I've always said, there are no perfect vehicles.

If your mirrors are adjusted corrrectly you will see a vehicle directly behind you in your rear view mirror. As it moves to the left to pass you and just as it starts to leave your rear view mirror it appears in your side mirror. As it moves forward and just as it starts to disappear from your side mirror it appears out of the corner of your eye next to you. You should be able to do this without turning your head more than an inch or two. Same as the other side of the car. If you can't do what I just described than your mirrors are not adjusted correctly.
I'm not saying you shouldn't twist your head every which if you want but from driving trucks and towing vehicles where one can't see anything out the back or back sides of the vehicle one learns to really adjust the mirrors so you have 180 degrees of view without having your head on a swivel. The new mirror on the Acura is neither here nor there for me. I think it does project out to the left a tiny more so your mirror doesn't have to be adjusted out as far or if so, it may pick up a car that is way to left in their lane a little quicker. I really don't even notice it, I just look in the mirror as usual and realize it gives me a little wider view of that lane to my left.

Thanks for your reasonably stated summary of how to properly use the side mirrors. I have set mine exactly as you describe and, like you, I have found that the RDX mirror seems to provide a little wider left view than a non-expanded view mirror.

With all that was explained on how to use the mirror....it still is too much of a pain in the asteroids to use efficiently, quickly and safely. It's just not that good at all. IMHO of course!
It was an "attempt", feeble as it was, to do something for better rear viewing by the driver.
Poorly done, but, still love my RDX.

Count me in, too. At first it made me dizzy trying to use the distorted fun house image, but now I just ignore it. It's such a small portion of the mirror that it's ineffective, and I'd rather have that real estate dedicated to a "regular" mirror.

after putting about 200 miles on my new RDX, I seem to have joined most others in this thread. I mostly ignore the extended portion of the side view mirror. however, it has not bothered me to lose the useable real estate on the mirror.
Thanks to all the answers.
