Well, I'm trying to replace the lower control arms on my 2013 RDX Base. The passenger side wasn't too bad but on the driver side.... Ugh! Sometimes I hate engineers. The front-most bolt that goes through the bushing. You can unthread it completely but cannot remove it because it's blocked by the lower transmission mount. Has anyone found a procedure that works that doesn't involve: removing the air box, removing the upper mount, removing the lower mount, then doing the arm?
I was able to complete this today. Wasn't too bad. I thought I'd post my steps to help a future explorer.
1. Remove most of the engine under cover by pulling out the clips. I was able to leave it attached to the bumper cover and bend it out of my way far enough to proceed.
2. Brace the transmission with a sturdy wooden block or board on top of your jack. No need to apply much pressure. Just get it snug enough for the board to be firmly fixed.
3. Remove the two nuts that hold the transmission mount itself to the subframe (labeled B in the image). I think they were 14mm or 15mm. Sorry, I'm not 100%.
4. Remove the two bolts that hold the transmission mount bracket to the transmission (labeled A in the image). One is a little deep and needs an extension. These I'm sure were 15mm. IMPORTANT: Don't remove bolt C.
5. No need to remove the mount or bracket completely. It is now loose enough for you to lift out of the way to allow room for the lower control arm bolt to slide out of the front pivot point.
6. Remove the LCA.
7. Replace the LCA.
8. I suggest sliding the front bolt in first and leave it loose. Next do the two rear bolts and snug them down. Next, attach to the ball joint (or if you are replacing both together, insert the ball joint into the knuckle and loose tighten the castle nut. Don't torque yet.
9. Now tighten the front bolt and the castle nut. Don't torque yet.
10. Re-install the two bolts and nuts for the transmission mount and bracket.
11. IMPORTANT! Use your jack to lift the control arm enough to raise the car off the jack stand. You must not torque the front and rear lower control arm bolts until the suspension is loaded.
