Audio Question: DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II

Hi,

The tech package blurb mentions DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II. How does one take advantage of these? Do they only apply to 5.1 DVD-A discs? Or can stereo CDs be "enhanced" somehow (e.g., thru some DSP type technology) to play in simulated surround sound?

Thanks,

Gregg

I think it applies to audio CD's. I have not tried a 5.1 DVD to see if just the audio tracks play. The Demo CD that came with the Acura is pretty good at showing the difference between plain 2 channel stereo, and the same music played in 5.1.

I'm pretty sure that the only DVDs you can play are DVD-A (i.e., DVD Audio) disks. I tried some concert video DVDs, hoping that the audio would play, but it would not. Some of these DVDs in fact only had audio on them, but they were not DVD-A disks.

As for CDs, I was wondering if they were somehow enhanced to give simulated 5-channel surround sound or if they were simply "5-channel stereo".

Thanks for the information. I had never heard of DTS CDs (but I just googled them). I hardly know anything about DVD-A discs, except that I have 2 that I bought by mistake in the past (online, without noticing the different sized case), and now I'm glad I have them, and of course the demo disc that came with the RDX Tech Package. Most DVD-A discs are really expensive. Is that just the way it is, or has that format died and so the remaining discs went way up in price?

I have no idea if any of my many CDs are DTS CDs. Probably not.

Are there also Dolby Pro Logic II CDs? If not, then what does that refer to in the description of the Tech package?

Thanks,

Gregg
