Jim....I am afraid to say that your math is old - yojcboy is correct. That being said, 20mpg for city driving is not that horrendous if there is lots of stop and go.

Best guess after 3 tanks of gas on our AWD tech package (using premium 92-93 gas)
21 ish mpg mixed driving, mostly back roads. This isn't that much worse than the '07 TSX we traded in. You really had to punch it to prevent a very short first to second upshift. Never fell in love with that slush box tranny.
29 mpg MAXIMUM on the highway 65 - 70 MPH on rolling divided highways. Put the pedal down and expect that to drop quickly. The old TSX could easily eek 34mpg under the same conditions.
I think there's really something to this cylinder deactivation.

Does anyone else find themselves watching the instant fuel economy readout? I love seeing it change when the engine goes from 6 cylinders (~20 MPG) to 4 (~30 MPG) to 3 (~40 MPG).

Shameless bump of rxdm's suggestion - everyone should consider using fuelly.com to track MPG. You can even text in the miles, price, and gallons and it does the work.

Our 2013 RDX has been doing very well on fuel consumption. The first tank was 30.4 mpg (7.7 l/100 km) This was was about 95% hwy driving w/o using AC. The second tank was 25.0 mpg (9.4 l/100 km), about 80% hwy with some AC use. The most recent tank was 30.5 mpg (7.7 l/100 km). This was 100% hwy driving, with 100% AC use. Very pleased with the fuel consumption so far!

I'm amazed at my RDX AWD's highway mileage. It must be the variable cyclinder management, which as folks have stated, is not noticeable to the driver except for the mpg indicator going up!
Recently, I averaged 32.5 mpg (average speed of 74 mph) on the highway.
You have to love Honda engines.

I don't know about other manufacturers, but I know my '04 TL gets way better highway mileage than it was supposed to. I used to get 30-32 mpg cruising at around 70 mph for about 290-300 miles. Nowadays I only get around 28-30 mpg. The car is rated for 28 mpg on the highway, I think.
It's amazing to think that a crossover is getting better mileage (or at least equal) just 8-9 years later. It's one of the reasons I'm looking into the RDX.

honda engines love to cruise and will be relatively fuel efficient. i think the TL is rated for 29mpg (but what's one MPG?).

JCBOY....I just did about 670km on my first tank of gas and just filled it up this morning but you got to realize the vehicle is not fully broken in yet. Let me put it to you this way, I rented a Ford Focus who is suppose to give me less than 5l/100km on the highway 2 days ago, I came back from a highway trip (all highway) and I was averaging 7.8l/100km. My 2012 TL AWD with 305HP get an average of 9.8-10.2l/100km when combining 50/50 highway and city. Trust me, if you like the RDX, get it as it will reward you time and time again. The TSX was a great car for me too and that I4 was great but at the end of the year, you will not spend that much more. Take an average 500km per week, over 52 weeks, we are talking 26 000km. If the difference between the RDX and the TSX is 2l per 100km....that means that 26 000 / 100 = 260 extra litre X 1.25l (here) = 325 a year (or $6.25 a week). When you put the numbers in perspective, it does help doesn't it?
ALSO...Life is too short. Get what you want! Imagine if 3 years from now, you get diagnosed with a terminal disease....Will saving 300$ a year be worth it then? I am not saying you should buy more than you can afford but don't let a few dollars a month get in the way of what really appeals to you. The cost of fuel is pennies compared to the cost of the vehicle itself.....

My first tank on the 2013 Rdx awd was approx. 650 km. that's about 80% highway. Cost me $61 to fill it up vs $85 on the 2010 Rdx I had. (2010 would get about 460 km per tank)
Seemless cylinder deactivation, and the passenger seat is way low. Wife is not to happy about not being able to adjust it. You get use to it though. Not a deal breaker.

all acura's take premium. high compression engines like high octane gas. i know the 1G TSX it was recommended NOT required. the TL, MDX, RL, RDX, 2G TSX, ZDX i believe premium is required. it's 20 cents a gallon/about $200 extra a year on gas.

Just hit 750 miles - overall MPG in mixed hwy/city conditions is 23.3. I can definitely see a big difference between highway only (when 30 MPG is actually possible, even though this is an AWD) and city only (20ish MPG).
The MPG information screen does a good job of reminding you that blasting past the idiot in the Wrangler will take a toll on the tank hahaha.

I just bought the new 2013 RDX AWD Tech package and I love it, but the MPG on this car is really weird. I'm not sure if it is the way I drive it. But I took it on the highway and I was really blown away about how much MPG I can get only on the highway and as most of you have mentioned, you can get well over 30+ MPG. But as I started driving it in the city more, and I live in NYC. The MPG started dipping at around 15 MPG. I know the EPA is only an estimate of 19 MPG but having a variation of 4 seems kind of big no?

City driving could be very different. If you spend most of the time waiting for lights or just standing still all bets are off.

Ahh, I had a feeling it would be normal but seeing it dip blow 4 mpg from the suggested kind of blows and since most of the time I will be driving it in the city. I would rather drive the gx470 and i feel it gets just as much and i can drive it the way i want to lol. with the rdx i'm constantly looking at the mpg gauge and trying to get the most out of it like others have mentioned haha. thanks though I didn't want to call in service and make a fool out of myself.

You will have the same problem no matter what vehicle it is. Except for hybrids and electric cars which are great in the city, of course.

I'm currently getting about 21 mixed city/highway. I must admit though, I have a heavy foot and I'm ENJOYING the crap out of this car. Sure, its no M3, but for an SUV, its quite nimble and quick, especially compared to a Grand Cherokee and especially the God-Awful garbage 2.0T and LOW brakes in the BMW X3 (HATED that car, lol ) It felt like a better handling version of my sister-in-law's 2006 Hyundai Tucson, and I'm not exaggerating or kidding. Hopefully by the time I'm out of my honeymoon phase, I will start getting something closer to 25 combined (which I will be more than happy with)

Just took my new RDX out for a business trip. Filled her up and reset the trip counter. 347.7 miles later I filled it back up again and it took 12.55 gallons, for an average of 27.7MPG. This was 80% highway, 20% backroads/around town driving. Pretty sure I could have hit close to 30MPG if I didn't hit some of the traffic I experienced. Much better MPG than I expected, certainly better than my 09 BMW 335xi that the RDX replaced. My only complaint is that I wish the gas tank was bigger so I could get 500+miles per trip.

Ditto on the larger tank. And not even for the long highway runs because if you're being conservative I think 500 is possible. It's the city/mixed driving at 20 MPG where I'm refilling after 200-250 miles that I'm not crazy about. Then again with all the pollen this season I need to squeege the windshield every day anyway!

My TSX had a 70 litre tank (Canada) and this was with an I4 engine...this RDX has a bigger engine and has a 60 litre tank. To me, its not a major concern either way because I rarely let my tank go too low anyway. I prefer fueling more often and put 40-50$ att a time then going to the pump and have to put 90$ in on shot. *lol* I know its the same thing but its just psychological for me....my TSX was crazy as far as mileage was concerned...I could go see my folks which lived 5h away (at the time) and return on the same tank of gas!
Curious what is used to determine the gas tank size....is it based on the underbody space available? There is no way that they use the size of the full tank as a possible consideration for getting their fuel mileage ratings do they? A heavier full tank of gas could affect fuel consumption? I don't think that would be the case but just trying to understand....almsot like the whole discussion about the 91 octane versus 89 Octane

540km on tank 1, 51 liter fill up (50% hwy) 10.8 l/100km
465km on tank 2, 50 liter fill up (10% hwy) 11.1 l/100km
Tank 3 is a 50/50 mix right now (hwy/city) 9.8 l/100km, but city side is going up fast.
Can't recall what my 2005 tsx does, but this feels close enough that I don't notice.

A question to any willing Canadian - is there a generally accepted factor to convert MPG to l/km? Or must one convert the distance and fuel consumption as the actual product is reversed between our two systems?
And another shameless bump to suggest anyone interested in tracking their gas economy to use fuelly.com. Super easy to use and I've trained myself to text in the odometer, price, and gallons right when I'm at the pump. And you can choose to use l/km should you prefer!
