Tranny slipped today! What to do? Sell, tranny flush...Just bought this car
First of all I have a 2002 Acura CL Type S automatic of course with 106,000 miles that i bought on May 30, 2008! The car has had 3 owners before me, but is in excellent condition cosmetically except I think the tranny is about to go It has a clean Carfax and has never seemed to have a tranny replaced on CARFAX record, but the shift lock is missing like it has had a tranny problem.
As I was driving home today I got stuck at a redlight slightly up hill. I proceeded to hit the gas and it took about 2 seconds before the car would catch the gears and start moving. I've noticed that the car seems to loose some power at low speeds and seems to be trying to decide which gear to be in and when to shift.
Should I do a tranny flush myself and while I'm at it clean the engine with some seafoam?
Or should I just recoup what I will loose on a tranny by selling the car now I really love the car and bought it before reading about all the tranny issues, but I don't think I could afford a new tranny!
I feel sick to my stomach over this

take it to a dealer, the tranny is covered for 7 years\109000 miles. Your mileage is RIGHT under the limit. Any decent dealer should replace your tranny with no hassle if it needs to be replaced.

i didn't buy it from a dealer though. I bought it off a used car lot.
After doing a bit of reading I also think it could be my IACV cause my idle goes down and that is when I notice that I am loosing power. I may just try replacing that or cleaning it and see if that helps

It doesnt matter if you bought it from the dealer. As long as your under the time, miles, and do not have a salvage the title the dealer legally has to cover it. Call them up now.

yeah get it Replaaced and your car will be good for anouther 100K
I had mine replaced at 99k have 155k now as long as u flush the tranny fluid every 20-30k the new tranny will last. If its the original tranny then i would have never touched the car but trannys after a certain date are repaired and work just fine. Get it DLR replaced and the car will last anouther 7 years no prob!

well I just seafoamed the car and it seemed to do wonders. I think it just needed a good cleaning and first gear was where it showed cause the rpm fluctuation. I'm gonna clean the IACV and flush the tranny and then see the dealer. I'm assuming it has already had a new tranny since the shift lock is missing

yea...i know its not hte problem. I've tried to reenact the problem and can't even get it to do anything before and after the seafoam. My throttle response is soooo much better. The old owners must have used 87 or 89 octane and had a lot of carbon buildup.

dude...not trying to be an ass, but quit being so damn hard headed. everyone is telling you exactly the right thing to do. you asked for advice and you are not listeing! take the car to the dealer and have them check out the tranny. it may have stored an error code in the ECU that they can pull up. it is 100% FREE, and if it turns out the car needs a new tranny you will get a loaner car FREE.
you will be kicking yourself in the ass if you wait and the car leaves you stranded somewhere, or worse it could lockup while you are going down the freeway at 65+mph.

In my 97 3.0CL I told the dealer there was a problem from 10k until the transmission died at 32k, 2k out of warranty. The dealer (Santa Monica Acura) refused to fix it. I paid 1400 and sued.
If my 01 Cl S had the slightest murmur and was under 109k, I'd be at the dealer at 7am the next day.
Or you can do it your way and wait until it dies at 109001. It's your car do what you want.

Lemon Laws stipulates that after a car is purchased in CA:
If there is major breakage that is not of "usual wear and tear" of the new owner, such as tranny, engine, axels, etc, the seller is obligated to buy back the car or pay for the repair or costs.
This is especially true if the car you just bought is recently purchased - say withint 6 months to a year.
If they do not comply, they are liable to get sued for greivences. And you would win.

Part of the procedure for checking for a "bad" tranny is for the dealer to drain the tranny fluid and look for possible "pieces" of the clutch pack. You flush it, any possible pieces will be gone.

Just scheduled an appointment. Soonest they could get me in was on Monday at 1:30.
Are they going to charge me for just having the car checked out? Sorry, I've never gone to a stealership for anything

good news! Only bad thing is that I am not 21 so I have to wait there instead of getting a loaner car. I kinda feel like this is going to be a waste of my time cause I can almost 100% gaurantee that the dealership will say they could not reenact the tranny problem and that my fluids look good

those mechanics have changed 100s of CL/TL trannies. they know what to look for, and they know the best ways to duplicate your symptoms on a test drive. if you went to a decent dealer and explained to them your concern especially with your warranty being close to expiring they may even change the tranny for you just based on your description of what happend.

Better than waiting on the side of the road for a tow truck.

^^^^not really. I'm already at or right at 7 years instead of the 109,000 miles. Besides, I don't want the tranny to break. I just noticed that it slipped and don't want to get screwed right after the warranty expires

yea, a free tranny and you dont want it cause i'll take it. I told my dealer my tranny was acting weird, they just looked at the tranny fluid and said yea, you need a new tranny. they know the transmissions fail so they are prepared to fix them. they are practically expecting you.

if nothing works and you cant get it done, get something in writing from the dealership like a reciept or work order stating that you brought the car in because you noticed all the dreaded symptoms @ xxxxx milage and you requested the car to be fixed. that way if you have 110 or 111 miles acura may still honor your warranty. you can always call and talk to corporate acura if the dealership wont be sensitive enough to your needs and they can usually make stuff happen for you.

Good luck, it happens to the best of us AT CL's ! Its not like u can take the CL back to the seller ya know. All u can do is at this point is take it to the dealer have them diagnose the problem, hopefully the tranny, and have it repaired at there cost. Or else find another problem, and fuckin bite the bullet and pay for the cost, or get another vehicle!

I'd take it in and say it had issues and ask for a diagnosis.

If you meet any or all of the following guidelines, you have reasonable grounds to expect a refund or replacement under the Lemon Law:
* You have taken your vehicle to an authorized dealer four or more times about the same problem OR your vehicle has been out of service for 30 days or more because of any number of problems. (The 30 days do not have to be consecutive.) If the defect is likely to cause death or serious injury to you or your passengers if you drive the car, you can ask for a refund or replacement after only two unsuccessful repair attempts.
* As of January 2000, the four repair attempts or 30 days out of service have occurred within the first 18 months that you own your car or the first 18,000 miles, whichever happens first.
* The problems are covered by the warranty and substantially impair the use, value or safety of the vehicle.
Used cars and the Law
The Warranty Act also applies to used vehicles that are still under a manufacturer's new car warranty. When a used car covered by a new car warranty is sold, any remaining time left in the warranty protects the car's new owner. The law covers "certified" used cars (autos with quality guarantees sold by dealers or through manufacturers' programs), resold lemons (defective vehicles that are bought back by manufacturers or dealers and then resold) and autos covered by extended service contracts.
By California law, the first time a lemon buyback is resold at the retail level, it must have one-year factory warranty to cover defects and cannot legally be sold "as is." The law requires that the car's title state that it is a "lemon law buyback" and the car must have a "lemon" sticker on the door jamb. When lemon buybacks are illegally sold "as is," the buyer still has rights under the Lemon Law.

Update...
After taking my car to acura they said that whoever had filled the tranny last(probly acura) had overfilled the fluid by 1-2 quarts I dunno who serviced the car last b/c I bought it used.
So they wanted $150 to drain the extra fluid and check for metal shavings b/c they couldn't get the car to act up on a test drive. I tried to hold back a laugh and politely said I would do it myself. Got it home, removed the drain plug and removed 1 1/2 quarts. Everything seems good now...I just hope that didn't cause any damage....could it?
