Unhappy Slip, slip, slipping away

So my tranny really started slipping in the last few weeks. The 2 to 3 shift is really bad, with RPMs surging about 1k if I'm on it from a stop. Under the same conditions, the 3 to 4 shift also slips, but only about a 500 surge.

Should I make my appointment now?

dunno man, I've got a 97 but its trans was replaced at about 78K, before I got it. the maintenance records pointed to similar symptoms you're describing.

Sounds like a Simon and Garfunkel song ... "slip, sliding away."

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Tranny failures certainly aren't a laughing matter, but hoping it won't 86 when you see symptoms appears to be wishful thinking. Take it in before you or someone else gets hurt.

So I'll call tomorrow to see what these guys will do for me. I've got a few dealers to try, so hopefully we'll get it taken care of soon.

This same thing happened to me on Friday. I was driving home and it was shifting hard, slipping, etc. Thinking i didnt want the tranny to die and be stranded this weekend, I called my dealer and told them i was on my way over to have it looked at.

It slipped and shifted hard all the way to the dealership, but once i park and get the service guy, its totally back to normal ARRRRGGGG.. i hear this always happens. Once the dealer is around, the problem seems to mysteriously go away. They told me they couldnt do anything until they can verify the problem, so I guess i have to wait till it fails and strands me AGAIN!!

I havent driven it this weekend because of the shitty weather so Im not sure if the problem is still there or when it will appear again. It drove home from the dealer just fine but I know this problem isnt over yet

You know the warranty information provided by Acura states when the transmission gear breaks, it can cause a lock up and possibly make the car crash.
I'd take it to the dealer and have a service rep come and take a ride so they can see how bad it is. Better to be preventative, than to have it ruin more of the powertrain. You'd rather not have the worst situation occur.

Took it to Sussman this morning and they drove it. Confirmed it's slipping and they took it from me.

BUT - I got a brand new Nissan Maxima to drive in the meantime. Like 28 miles on the ODO new. So that should be an interesting experience.

How does it feel driving a French car? Too bad they didn't give you a real car like a new TL or RL for a loaner.

Came from Enterprise, so not likely to get an Acura (not sure I want one anyway...).

Maxima is OK. It's the 3.5SE, so it does handle pretty well, but the throttle is very touchy compared to ours. But it will always be an ugly car to me.

So it took 7 days to get it changed out. I got it back Wednesday evening and all seems to be well. Nice to get back in my comfy seats - especially compared to the Maxima's.

Only difference I notice so far is that the shift points seem to be slightly different. I've only driven it about 75 miles so far, so maybe it's just a memory issue - or comparison to the Maxima. Otherwise, it appears to be working normally.

Anything I should be on the lookout for? Other than slipping again before I can sell it...
