How much for a bullet-proof 5A/T tranny?

Hi,
I have a '01 Auto CL-S =/. I hear they have glass trannies and break pretty easily. I'm getting a new transmission because of the Honda/Acura recall and I would like to know how much it would cost to upgrade the transmission (if possible) to something more reliable. I know the glass-like auto tranny is mainly the reason why there is no turbo for the automatic CL-S, but if its possible to upgrade the tranny would it be possible to put boost on it?

There are many folks with the auto tranny who have the Comptech Supercharger.

As for a "better" tranny, if you feel you need to upgrade you can contact Dean on these boards as they offer an upgrade. It's somewhere in the neighborhood of $5k - $7k, but he's be able to give you more accurate pricing.

Honestly, once you get the recall taken care of you should be fine....

I think the tranny was in the 4k range

I was going to do this after the next tranny dies.

I recommend Dr. Evil who really can help.

Level 10 tried and fu<kud up plenty of people with AV6 especially one guy with custom turbo. He invested lots of money into it, had numerous problems and eventually had to abandon the project due to Level 10.

Do it right the first time. I also heard Velocity Res. (Florida) doing a tranny upgrade fine

Same for me. You've got 100k miles to figure it out. Spend money on different mods first. Let Honda pick up the tab in the meantime.

Level10 ran into a lot of financial problems, they took money from people and never produced the product. I would stay away from them if possible.

I've heard good things about Dr.Evil and since they've already done the AV6 it probably would be easy to do one for the TL/CL 5AT. Would need to contact them yourself though.

Dean already has a re-designed tranny, mostly involving putting in stronger pieces into the existing tranny. You can talk to him about pricing although I think you'd need to find someone to install it for you. If you do a partial username search on 'Dean' I'm sure you'll find his posts. He's also an official vendor here, so you can probably find him in the Black Market.

It doesn't matter. If Dr. Evil made 4 speed happy, I'm sure 5 speed will be not a problem, just takes more time to make it

I've seen pictures of the V/R tranny upgrade and all they do is break down the tranny, replace the parts they've remanufactured and then rebuild it in the same casing. It looks exactly the same as before, so honestly unless you tell acura, there's no way they should really know you have a rebuilt and upgraded tranny.

i suppose the only way they should be able to tell is that you haven't been in for a new tranny yet..

Too much work and too expensive. A rough estimate is set at around 10k dollars after it's all said and done.

It makes more financial sense to upgrade the 5AT and drop in an LSD. Not to mention autos are more consistent in the quarter-mile and doesn't make you work out your left leg.

Don't me wrong, I LOVE driving a stick. But in traffic, I would much rather have my 5AT. And with SportShift, you can hold a gear as you wish, just like a stick. I don't really miss the clutch pedal that much.

Oh, and no misshifts with automatic.

And, if you're in CA, you have the fun of dealing with the smog police.

Just get a 6-speed.
