How long do rebuilds generally last?

My transmission is finally at the point where it's a huge, grinding effort the shift into third and I'm considering getting the transmission rebuilt. I really like this car and plan on driving it after this for at least another 100k miles if I do the rebuild, is the feasible? If I go through with it I'll be doing a trans rebuild as well as all new struts and rear springs, car is about to roll 170k. Aside from the trans and suspension the car runs/drives really well, just want to make sure I'm not throwing almost $2k down the drain on something that'll be toast in 40k.

I'm sort of in the same place, except there is no third, maybe fourth. Really like the car. My (good) mechanic wants to put in trans/clutch, upwards of $5K. Just a couple of years ago he said I should get 300K. New trannies may be hard to get. Better to rebuild than buy a rebuilt one. Then, is the minor rust in the rear wheel wells gonna be the psychic death of me?
