bad batch of trannys? do bad trannys have any correlation to when it was bought?

my buddy who owns a TLS said the tranny problems are due to a "bad batch" of trannys from a certain timespan (he said around april 2001); that most of the cars with tranny problems were bought within this timespan. i just want to know if anyone knows if there is any validity in his statement. thanks

My dealer told me the same thing when I first inquired about that after purchasing my 2002 CL-S. Unforatunately, there is NO truth to the 'bad-batch' theory! Now a "bad design" theory carries more weight!

There is another possibility. It is possible that during manufacturing process of CL transmission there was manufacturing/production screw up (defect) which randomly occurs in 5-10%(not sure what is the %) number of the cases. Some deffects are very bad, and tranny fails at 5K miles, some are not that bad and tranny fails at 30K miles. I assume for a fix they changed manufacturing process to significuntly reduce the defect rate for premature 3rd gear clutch tear out( what LA article mentions is the problem )

It happens often in industry that manufacturing process is vulnurable for defects in particular parts... Do you call this a design flaw, or a bad assembly/production process?

This theory also explains what is happening with our cars.

PS. At my work we are doing production of PCI boards for Solaris... We have fixed % rate of defective boards, its pretty steady from time to time. I dont know much about the process, but from what I heard, its totally acceptable to have production mistake ( eventhough design is solid )
Ofcourse, we test those boards, and throw them away before they get delivered to the customer. Well, transmission you can not test completly in first 5 miles... The result could be weaker part that is doomed to failed at a later time, and depending how weak it is, it will fail at 5K, 15K, 30K, 60K ??? miles.

Just my 2cents

Anyone is welcome to challenge my theory, we will not know anyway what is really happening ( it's all under Acura's big corporate umbrella )
