Would it be worth it to upgrade my tire size?
Right now I am running 215/45/18 tires on 18x7.5 wheels. Would it be worth it for me to upgrade my tires to 235/40/18? I know that the traction and handling would theoretically be improved, but would it be enough of an improvement to be worth it?

changing 215 to 235 will give you a bigger contact patch, traction could be increased by a lower UTQG tire. but....
1. going from 45 - 40 sidewall
2. increasing width from 215 - 235
those differences are going to increase tire weight due to addt'l material being used in the tire.
So, the added dynamic weight is going to slow acceleration, slightly. Butt dyno wont be able to tell, but a drag time slip might.
worth it? not sure. If you could find a set of tires in the new size for same or slightly more, I would do it.

i have 225 40 r18 and my speedo is off by 4% if i remember correctly
if go 235 40 r18 that's as close to stock as u'll get with 18s i believe.
It looks a little more aggressive with the 235 40s cause the profile is bigger and it just looks closer to stock. but the 225 40s look like they are wrapped much tighter on the rim (i got an 8 inch rim) and I think I prefer that look more. plus it will corner a little better with a smaller profile/wall
remember profile is a percentage of the WIDTH of the tire. so a 40 profile on a 225 isn't as big as a 235. and it's actually QUITE noticeable
I like a speedo reading a little high tho... less likely to be booked speeding. trust me it helps on the long highway trips.

Uniform Tire Quality Grading
If your current rating was a 500 then you dropped down to a 300 rating, that is a stickier compound -- traction.
OEM Passenger car tires are ususally 400-500. Auto-X, road course tires are like?? 100-200
(sorry, my knowledge ends there, lol)

yeah, 280-340 TR is a good balance in my opinion..
some companies are larger than others, so look up overall height of tires to be most accurate...gl
