Winter Tires

So winter is almost here and im thinking about getting some winter tires. Right now i have the orig michs on which they are slowly coming to an end. After 115k km on them i dont think they will do very well this winter. Seeing that this is my first winter witht the CLS 6MT, Ill probably wait for the first actual snow fall so that i can actually get a feel on how this car handles in such environments. But when looking around ive kinda narrowed it down to these selections.

Pirelli's (Winter Carvings or Snow Sports)
Hankooks
Michelins X-ICE

Thoughts or any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Try sending Joe5.0 a PM and ask him. He ran a set of steelies with snow's on his 6spd. Not sure how well the car did, I can't remember.

EDIT: Just found this... https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...ighlight=steel

I wouldn't even try it on the worn stock Michelins, they are horrible!

I bought 16" TL wheels from ebay (~$200) and then bought Blizzaks from tirerack. The car is great with the combo!

I have heard good things about Hankook.

Thanks for the heads up... i usually prefer Pirelli's as i use to have their winter ice on my teggy which i found those to be outstanding. Its just that people are raving about the Mich's. Ive also had Hankooks summers for my teggy which i found those to be extremely enjoyable and for the price i couldnt be happier. With the CL being more demanding (power and weight) i didnt want to buy something thats, underpowered?! I guess by the reviews and such its going to come down to price and to whome i can find the best deal with.

I had very good luck with the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2's on my wife's old Saab, great snow traction, pretty good when dry too (as good as the stock Michelin Pilot all-seasons). I actually left them on year round since they performed better then the stock tires, got 50K out of them (she drives kinda slow). I'd get them again.

Yeah as you can see in that thread i have the off brand winterforce tires for the winter. They work great, and are actually made by firestone.

I got them in 205/55/16, and they work a thousand times better than stock michelins in snow, esp if they are worn.

I guess anything would be better at this point. Already in the rainy weather i can already feel the tires slip around corners and turns. NNoooo... im not whiping around them either!

OK, I lived in Vermont and Maine for three winters. At the time I had a Mazda MX-6 (1994 5 speed), and the best tires I had were Vredestein. My wife was driving a Volvo S90 (rear wheel drive) and we had Gislavid Nordfrost on it. The Gislavid were the best true snow tire I have ever driven on. But I will be looking for the Vredestein again for my new 03 CL-S6 I just bought in June. These are two great Euro companies that make snow tires for the Scandanavian winters, so I think they know what they are doing.

One other piece of advice - You are going to want to get into 2nd gear asap in snow or ice! If you are even slightly moving forward, put it in 2nd gear with just a llttle gas.

Good luck to us all this Winter!!

Im actually in Toronto Canada... Is it better to stick with 215's or to drop to a thinner tire? The lowest i should go is 205 right?

The thinner the better in snow. Are you putting these on your stock rims? What size rims are you going to put them on?

More than likely these are going on my stock rims which ill beef up my summer rims next season. BUT, if 205's are MORE ideal while the stockies cant go that thin, ill probably go with the winter steelies. As of now im looking at either the HAKKAPELIITTA RSi's or even the Q's if i can score a deal on the dated Q's. Most shops around here are pushing the Dunlops (Graspic DS-2) and the Toyo's (Observe Garit KX or Observe G-O2-Plus) ... thoughts? Man too many choices!!

I have no idea which one would be better, like I said I went with Blizzaks and was done with it.

Well i finally decided, the X-Ice it is. I really wanted the Hakka Rsi's but i couldn't wait around a week or so for them to ship them in, i needed them placed on today. Im actually quite pleased with the dry performance with these. I thought they would make the cars ride that much more bubblier when compared to the stocks i have on. Maybe because the stocks that i had on where crap and worn out, i dunno, but so far im extremely pleased. Now i cant wait for the silly white stuff to fall... BRING it on mutha nature!
