Hello,
I pump my tires to 36psi, as said in the owners manual. but when i do this the tire looks semi-deflated. the max pressure as stated on the tire wall is 40psi. should i run it at 36psi or 40 psi?? thx.

If the max on the sidewall says 40 psi, stick closer to 36. Note that when you drive, your pressure rises and you don't want to drive too far on overinflated tires.
When I autox, I go up to 40 psi cold and after a few runs, that gets up to 44. Time to let some air out to keep it around 40. Same is true on the street if you drive very far. I commute about 30 miles each way, so I keep mine at 35-36, knowing that they warm up to around 38-40 on that drive. The ride is good and the mileage is better.

You don't fill your tires up according to the number on the tire. You fill it up according to the number written on the car (in the manual). Check out this page for information on what a properly inflated tire should look like http://auto.howstuffworks.com/tire4.htm
To answer your question 36psi is fine.
I hope this clears some things up
