Sorry for yet another tire question, but I am going to buy and wanted to make sure I hear from you guys first.

I don't race around, need a tire that will last (I'm cheap) but also want wet/snow handling.....

Based on researching Tirerack and searching our site, I am inclined to buy the Sumitomo HTR+ at $296 + $40 s/h

Bang for bucks, seems like the Sumi fit my criteria but wanted feedback before I throw my hard earned bucks away...

I have the Sumitomo HTR+'s... just go them 400 miles ago...

They handle great in the dry .. much improved launches over my stock tires... in the snow they're about as good as my Michelins if not better. But not better by much. Significantly better i'd say in the wet than the Michelins.

Michelins suck... I have had the misfortune of owning a 96 and a 98 Accord with the Mich.. Then I get my Acura. Can't get away from them....

If it were me, I would spend the extra $68.00 and get the Contis. I have done a bit of research on these tires, and the general consensus appears to be the they are significantly better than the stock Michelins in the snow.

According to TireRack's survey, the Contis are superior to the Sumos in every category, including both snow traction and tread wear . IMO, over the life of your tires, the premium in "hard earned bucks" is easily justified by the performance gained.

Can't comment on the Conti's but the Sumi's are my winter tire and they perform well in the snow and rain. Dry traction isn't bad and much better than stock. Sidewall has a little more flex in the turns that I like but hey for the price you can't beat them.

What does it mean about threadwear being 360 (for Sumi) and 400 (for Conti)???

It refers to the UTQG ratings of the tire. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/general/utqg.htm

I have read that this number probably provides a better indicator between different tires of the same brand than it does between tires of different brands.

I can't answer that question, but the stock Michelins are rated at only 300.

Crap!! I was reading the review on the Sumi at Tire Rack and the mileage wear is terrible. The Contis are better but have a problem with balance & chatter when cold....

Back to the drawing board. I need a tire that can get me 40k+ miles and is decent in wet/snow....

The contis all the way, best all season bang for the buck, trust me I searched for info regarding these two tires, and for the past 3 months, they have been great, handeled all wheather including inches of snow which handled fine with VSA on!! dry/wet grip is great, does not squel when launching and cornoring....they are on my winter set up.........hope that helps, oh with 400 treadware they should hold me up for a few seasons!!

i have the sumitomo htr's i like them, i know most people don't like the michelin's, but if your not doing track days with them, you have to admit, the ride was alot better with the stock michelins, also a very quiet tire

Many people who have negative things to say will have more of an impetus to posts a negative review... the happy customers tend not to return to tirerack to post about how much they like their tire. This is debateable of course,

I have a little cold vibration in the sumi's .. but after a couple miles, they warm up and they're smooth.

From what I understand, the Sumitomo's have the same treadpattern as the Dunlop SP5000's .. someone told me they were manufactured by the same company (Dunlop and Sumi)

:shakehd: You'll WANT an alighment. I got all 4 tires replaced with the Sumis and later I found out I had my toe off. Go get an alignment...a good one will warranty their work for 1 year/12k miles, so naturally, I'll get an alignment check again at 11.5k.

I have the Sumitomo HTR+ and they work as advertised in all seasons. A great tire.

It'll be hard to find someone who can give an honest head-to-head comparison. Few of us (if any) have owned both tires. You probably won't go wrong with either tire.

True. Dunlop and Sumitomo are owned by the same parent corporations. It wouldn't surprise me if they share tire molds. I am not sure if the material is the same though. YMMV.

and the Sumi HTR+


tread pattern may appear to be the same between the latter two, but note the directionality of the cut of the tread

I have the Conti's

I have now put about 1000 miles on them and these are the things that I noticed.

1. MUCH better than the POS stock tires in the snow and rain.
2. Much more road feel, it seems to follow the depressions left by the 18 wheelers alot more than the stock Michelins.
3. Quieter than the Michelins

I had the sumo's and only got 13K miles out of them. I am looking at the Conti's as well because I would like to see closer to 25K for a set of tires personally.

I am on about 5K on the Contis and they are OK. Not great. I don't 'feel' the confidence in the tire when I push hard in a tight corner. But then, I am not a speedster.

My g/f is looking at tire and Goodyear has a new tire out that seems to have good reviews. They are called Triple Threads, Check Tirerack out for reviews. She is going to put them on her Camry and price is really good. If she puts it own after 6/27 with our Good Year, she gets a $75 grocery card. So, if you want a quick, first impression, I can do that after next month. Oh! And the Good Year is supposed to last 80K. At first, I thought this tire would suck with such good life on the tire but after reading the reviews on Tirerack, I am open minded.

Wow...you must either need an alignment, change your tire pressure, or must be driving like a mad man. These are what sumitomos should look like after 15k miles.

edgalang you must drive very slowly and non aggresive to have that much tread at 15k I drive relatively hard and get 12-15k max...thats with rotating, right tire pressure, and correct alignment and balancing

Hmmm...now you're making me second guess when I got the tires. I'll double check the mileage on my work order/receipts again. Either way, I drive mostly freeway miles and keep my tires inflated to 43.

So as not to start another thread it sounds like both the Sumi's and Conti's are good all-season perf tires (or at the very least better than stock). From what I gather it sounds like the Conti's are a little better as far as treadware. Does this sum it up?

I need to find some all season tires for my wife's accord riding on the stock TLS wheels.

I have had the Sumitomo HTR+ for 10K miles and they look exactly like Edgalangs.
Had them put on at same time as CT Springs and had alignment done at Dealer (PAA in NJ) same day. They have been great. : D

Have the 6 speed guys noticed heavier wear than the auto's? My GF has a TL S and her are in much better shape. She drives just as hard as me. i have had an alignment. The car and the sterring wheel are perfectly straight, no pull at all.
