Smallest offset for 18 and 19 inch wheels?

What's the smallest offset we'd be able to use on the CL-S with 18X7.5, 18X8, and 19X8 inch wheels? I guessing +38 and +40 are too low for an 18X7 wheel, right?

Tire Rack says +45mm is OK on a 18x7.5 wheel, but I don't like the sound of those numbers. I just ordered some Racing Hart Type C2's in 18x8 +50. The fittment people at Dazz say this is the best fit for my car.(225/40/18 tires)

I think it works as follows:

Stock is 17x7 +55:

now, for 18x7.5 you added 1/2 (12.7mm) to the width of the rim so you would have subtract a 1/4" (6.35 mm) from the stock offset or 55-6.35 ~= 48+

now, for 18x8 you added 1 (25.4mm) to the width of the rim so you would have subtract a 1/2" (12.7 mm) from the stock offset or 55-12.7 ~= 42-43+

I think anything wider than 8" won't fit on CLS.

I didn't actually get an answer last time I asked so maybe somebody can help me here. What exactly does the offset measure? The diameter, width and weight of the wheel are measured with other numbers so what dimension does the offset measure?

Thanks.

The offset of a wheel is what locates the tire and wheel assembly in relation to the suspension. More specifically, it is the measured distance between the hub mounting surface and the center line of the rim. Below is an explanation of the various types of offsets which are pictured in the above graphic.

Positive Offset
A positive offset occurs when the hub mounting surface is on the street side (the side you see) of the center line of the rim. Most factory rims will have this type of offset.

Zero Offset
When the hub mounting surface is centered within the rim, it is known as a zero offset.

Negative Offset
If the hub mounting surface is on the brake side of the center line of the rim, it is considered a negative offset or "deep dish".

It is not the diameter of the wheel that determins the need for change to the offset(17,18,19). It is the width of the wheel(7,7.5,8"), unless you don't plan on reducing the height of the tire sidewall.
Then there are new tire widths to consider.
I did a lot of question asking before making my decision.

I've seen a couple people on this board say they have 18X8.5 wheels on the CL-S and Doug from Rick Case also said it was possible, I'm really looking into 18X8 or 19X8, depending on the size availability of the rims I decide. Some of the rims I've seen are 18X8 with an offset of +38 and +40, which I guess means I'm pretty much screwed and better look for other rims.

You forgot to mention what tire size you're running.

Use the following link:

The stock wheel and tire info is:

Section Width: 215
Tire Aspect Ratio: 50
Wheel diameter: 17
Wheel width: 7
Wheel offset: 55

Put in the numbers for your wheel, and check out the numbers.

I am running 17 x 8 wheels with a +48 offset with 235/45-17 tires. If you plug in those numbers and print it out (or use some of the other setups that work), you will get an idea of stuff that works.

If you start moving too far out from those specs (like inboard increase, etc) your in for some possible trouble.

here is the link:

I have some 18x7 racing hart c2000's on mine. They are 44 offset. They come so close to the front brake caliper that you literally can't slide a credit card through the gap. But they don't rub. The tires are 215x35x18 and have no problem fitting in the wheel well. If I had a 43 I'm sure it wouldn't fit. Hope that helps..
