oh no, axle shot I think...

I think my passenger axle is toast. I noticed a clicking sound from the passenger side on extream turns. Like u turns. Also when that side gets wet I hear a loud wine while turning hard. I looked at the boot & it's not torn. I have noticed the steering feels a little loose, & my steering wheel cocks to the right a little. I had it aligned recently & the tires & rims are fine. Car tracks straight. I don't notice any weird vibrations, but then again my car is not smooth either. Hard to tell the difference in my car between the road, tires, & suspension. Brakes are fine. Belts are fine, Motor mounts are fine.

Does that sound like the Axle?

Yeh it does sound like that.

I would have it checked. By any chance, did you go through any puddles or mud lately? I had a similar noise but when I took it in to get checked it was gone. It never came back. The only thing is that they said that I may have went through some water.

It's south FL. It rains a lot here. I did notice it when it rained Saturday night when I was driving. But I didn't drive through any standing water.

Sounds like a CV joint has bit the dust.

Wouldn't the joint be the axle? Cause the boot is intact. I would think the CV joint is not a replaceable part & I'd have to get the entire passenger halfshaft.
After looking at a parts diagram I'm confused as to what I would need to buy.

You can rebuild the CV joint by cleaning it, regreasing it and putting on a new boot. It's eaiser to buy a rebuilt halfshaft which has a CV joint redone for you.

Are you sure the boot is intact? Is there any grease around the area?
The CV's start clicking when the grease escapes from a ripped boot.

i had my passenger axle rebuilt by a driveshaft shop for $45. took care of the problem. boot has a small knick in it and let all of the grease out, causing the cv joint to destroy itself.

They can be rebuilt depending on the severity of the wear. You could bring it to a shop and let them take it apart and they would tell you. Or you could buy a raman/new and have that installed

Ball joints would have play wouldn't they? At least on my Explorer they do if they are bad. I tried to shake the wheel when it was off the ground & it's solid. I also have even & normal tire wear. Strange thing today, I couldn't get the car to make any noise on that side.

nah, they dont really have much to do with play. just take a look at it, you dont even need to have the wheel off the ground, just jack the car up enough to expose the balljoint, it sits in the middle of the horseshoe looking piece above the wheel. its pretty obvious when their shot, the boot usually tears.

i don't think the top balljoint goes out very much. i think it's more the larger balljoint at the bottom of the hub assembly. i have had to replace both of them.

A little to the right. Feels a little loose as well still. Steering was my next thing to check out. I won't have time for a few weeks though.

You might check all the torquing of your suspension components...I just had both my axles replace and all they did mainly when they were bad was shake under acceleration and steer my car when I'd hit dips.

I think with my car lowered, everything feels much more sensitive coming through the steering wheel.

I have the same problem, shaking around 70 and up, my steering wheel was also cocked to the right...After I got an alignment if fixed it a little, the shop said everything looked okay. Stopped shaking for a little bit, but it went back to shaking now....
