noob wants to slam
If all goes well, I should be picking up my 03 S this afternoon. One of the first things I want to do is drop it. Because I am coming from a 3 gen TL, I dont know much about this. So . . . I need to know:
What is a decent drop without worrying about scraping on speedbumps and such?
What am I going to need?
How much can I expect to spend for the parts and install.
Thanks!

tein basic coilovers, around $700-750, camber kits are around 450. yes not as cheap as you would think. you can get springs but your stuck with those settings. i havent dropped my CL yet but from previous cars i know that if your tucking its a good possibility your going to scrape easily. when parking up to a curb or sidewalk you cant let your bumper hang over anymore, 1 try and youll be paying for it.

New springs & new struts. There are many options. Some more expensive then others.
Please use the search function & look at the FAQ at the top of the main CL forum.

I have Eibach springs and Tokiko shocks. I'm dropped about 2" in the front, 1.7" in the rear. My car is low enough to turn heads, but high enough to avoid screwing up my undercarriage. My shocks are adjustable and I keep them on the stiffest setting, although ride quality is still nice.

that way you can ride a little higher like blayz and not worry about speed bumps but when that urge finally hits to slam your car, whammie.

Good coilovers will let you vary the stiffness through a wide range, so you can make them harsher or smoother unlike (most) shock/spring combos.
Slamming coilovers is not a hard process you just have to crank them down on each corner - but you will probably need an alignment after you do it each time if you plan on keeping it like that for a while or you will run through tires like smokey n the bandit.

really depends what type of coilover you go with. Teins do not have an adjustable body so you have to crank down on the coil to adjust the height (teins will not allow you to slam anywhere near as low as the car in the picture above.) now ksports have an adjustable body so you have to remove the tire and loosen the lower body attachment to spin the lower body up higher, thus shortening the coilover assembly and lowering the car. adjustment will probably take about 45-60 minutes if you decide to go through the lowering process after you have them installed.
the installation....coilovers are a LOT easier because you do not have to compress the spring and etc. just pull out the old assembly and install the new. there is a great DIY on here if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and want to save money.
the ride....coilovers will be stiffer than shocks-spring combos. teins will be the closest to your stock ride while ksports will be a lot stiffer. i suggest checking out their websites and looking at the spring rates of the coilovers. if you want to spend some extra cash and get the adjustable lower body and have a lower-softer spring rate closer to tein check out AMR Engineering. they make custom rates but do cost more.
note the adjustable lower body on the ksports
