Did anyone put 235/50/17 tires on their stock wheels?
I need new tires and probably will get either Pirelli P-zero or Toyo Proxes 4, I have stock CL 17" wheels and not planning to upgrade. I was thinking that I can go 235 in width but not sure if it will create any kind of problems or mushy handling or something like that. Can anyone tell me if I should go 235 or 225?

I have toyo proxes 4s (235/45/17) on the stock rims with a comptech drop. No problems at all. The toyos do, however, have a "rim protector" bead that kinda sticks out and makes it look like the wheels are buried in the tire. Also, one tire guy said he couldn't align my wheels because they couldn't get the equipment mounted on the rim because of that.
Les Schwab said no big deal - just let the air out of the tire first, and the rim is plenty accessible.
But no rubbing or other problems, and the car handles 10 times better than the stock rubber.

Don't do it!
Technically we shouldn't even be running 245s on the stock wheel, but that's borderline. Going beyond this width on a 7.5" wheel is asking for trouble! Among other things, it doesn't allow the tire to attain its correct profile and work as it was designed.

CL-S OEM wheels are only 17"x7" Technically you shouldn't go above 225

You're right, my bad... I knew that the CL wheels were .5" wider than the TL's, but I was screwed up on my numbers....
But he still should go no wider than 235!

I would like to see how 'pinched' the 235s are though, any pics around?

I'm gonna be going with 235s this time around. It is nearly impossible to get 225s with the correct load rating for our cars. I've already blown 2 Pirelli PZero Neros in 225/45. I love the tire though. I might try it again in 235.

I just put on Toyo Proxes 4 and they're very good tires. Got the size 235/45/17. For some reason the guy who sold them to me said that P Zero's are not that great in handling compared to Proxes 4. Although a little more expensive. The car now feels more planted to the road (less body lean) and takes turns like crazy as well as high speed lane changes are more or less precise. Although I feel that it's still a bit sloppy because of stock suspension. I need an alignment also so we'll see how it drives after that.
235s look very nice, wide enough and nothing is sticking out. The pattern looks cooler than Pirelli also. I'll finally take some pics of my PDG CLS this weekend and then post them :o) My rims are not perfect though But they look good anyway, you have to look close to notice all the imperfections...
