Break-in Period for UHP tires!

I read once that there is a break-in period for Ultra High Performance Tires? Is this trure and for how many miles?

How one should break-in a new UHP tire?

Thanks.

Some dealers say yes, other say no.

The "old" days it was 50-100 miles to seat the bead.

I asked about the Toyos, and the sales guy said to just drive normally for the first day, then go for it.

Most of the newer tires will get sticker over 1-2 weeks as they "scrub-in". You will see little scratches in the tread as they get some "tooth".

A racer friend of mine has this "outgas" story about running on the freeway at speed to let the tires "outgas", but I couldn't find any info to back this up.

(just some thoughts -- take it with a grain of salt)

First Impression on new Wheels/Tires:

First, to any one who is thinking about what mod should be first.

To be honest with you, it's tires/wheels:

My first impression is that the new 235/40/18 Nitto 555 on Konig Imagine 18x7.5 are marvelous. They total transformed the CLS into another car. Not only for the look , but in the handling department too.

Yeah, you need to lower the CLS some 1"-2" it's looks like a 4x4 audi station wagon or an Outback now. But now I am happy with the new handling.

Back to performance, I am easy on my tires for now. But, man NITTO 555 pick sand and dirt like a "dirt devil" or a "Hoover" . They are super sticky. The car ride smoother, quiter, even bumps are well handled. On the HW even 90 miles feels like 45! I wonder why ACURA did not given those 18" as standard or at least as an option.

I will post another full review later this weekend. I need also to get the wheels re-torqued again when I ride some 25-75 miles on them.

No rubbing at all. Fit like a glove. I had plastic hub-centeric rim and do they not stick outside the CLS. Just flush with fender well edges. No Vibration at all. Wheels were balanced

It is a fantasitc mod for any CLS!

Happy piloting

It is interesting how the car now looks like it would really look great with those wheel gaps closed down about an 1" or 2".

See if the tires pick up gravel (j/k)

New tires have an oily feeling due to manufacturing process, maybe to release from mold. I put a new rear tire on my bike last summer and damn near low sided coming out of the dealer parking lot. The rear stepped out about 18". Went straight home put it on the centerstand and sanded the shine off. At least with a car you can't fall over, Yow. Just don't go WFO for a few miles. Luck.

Nashua, can you check the load rating on the actual tire? I've been looking into picking up the nittos, but I've been seeing conflicting info about the load rating. The nitto website says a different value than the tires.com website.

TIA

blxmjx,

I just Checked it. It is 91W. Max. 1536 lb @ Max 44PSI The front tire looks saggy.. As if they need more pounds... however, I remember that the stock tires used to look the same...

Do not know if that is okay.

How many pounds of air pressure do they have now?

This is an interesting point and one that Eric and I have been going back and forth on. If I remember correctly, Eric has 39lbs all around with his Toyos. I was running 32lbs but I feel that is too low so I raised to 36lbs all around. I think maybe even 37-39 might still be good as a "visual" inspection shows them looking sorta low. I will say that the ride seems a bit "firmer" now that I am at 36lbs vs. 32 lbs

I think Mike boosted his up to 35 and some of the MXM4 folks boosted theirs up a bit depending on their weight and load.

Guys,

I asked the guy who installed mine to pump some 32-34 PSI.

Should I boost mine too to 35 PSI!

Thanks.

It wouldn't hurt to give a try. Can you call Nitto on Monday?

I thought that some of the stock guys were running 35lbs (at least in front).

Give it a shot.... (just my opinion)

The tire companies have engineers, if you call your tire guy, he will probably give you the name of a "real" engineer at Nitto and tell you everything you could ever want to know about 'em.
