Anyone running on 225/45/17 with stock 03 Type S rims?

I might need to take them out from my altima.

Just wanted to know if anyone is running on 225/45/17 with stock 03 Type S rims, and if its ok to do so with stock suspension (no rubbing issues).

Thanks

Yeah they fit fine, I have them on 01 CL-S wheels in drag radials.

You'll be fine, it's a good substitute size.

Not a problem, you can even fit 2354517 easily...that is the exact diameter and load rating recommended for the CL/TL

Not a problem with fit, but your speedo will be off. I belief it will read slightly faster.

I suggest you go with 235/45/17's. The 225's are shorter than stock, so they will throw off the speedo a little bit, make the wheelgap look even worse, and wont ride as good. Also, I felt like my car was sort of "leaning forward" with them on. My 225's were ~ 3/4" shorter (when installed under load) than the stock tires. The shorter height did make the car feel a touch quicker off the line though, due to the gearing change.

Joe -
Good post and nice pic......I went to your album too. I'm also ready for new tires on my stock '01 CLS and posted here.
I'm still trying to decide between the 225/50/17 and the 235/45/17. In any case, I may need to get the mud flaps, as the tires may now extent beyond the fender.

235s really stick out over the edge of the rim though. 235 is slightly too large for a 7" wide wheel. The slightly smaller overall diameter won't affect your speedometer or your odometer enough to actually make a difference.

Good point, I posted here: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163460

I'm aware that many folks have the 235/45s on stock rims, but I'm still considering the 225/50s, with their slightly larger diameter. They fit the 7" rims, the speedo will read only 1 mph slow at highway speeds, and they'll also fill the wheel wells nicely. I may need to add the mud flaps for cosmetics, but the performance should be fine. Does anyone out there currently run the 225/50s?

That might be too large.

Someone here was running 235/50's on 8" wide rims and they were HUGE, even on an 8" wide rim, I wouldn't go that large. You might just barely be okay with 225/50.

These are the specs I copied on the other thread.

OE tires -- - P215/50R17/XL 93V RRBL 88482 6.0 - 7.5 8.7 on 7.0 25.5 10.0 819 1433@35 AC, HO, DC, M

Considering -225/50R17---- 94V RRBL 59993 6.0 - 8.0 9.6 on 7.0 25.9 10.0 803 1477@35 V

Is there a specific dimension that you think may be too large?

235/50's will look like donuts, the sidewall will be huge. I'm sure you'll lose some handling crispness, but they'll ride better.

I have seen 235/45/17 on stock wheels and it looked fine. Yes, they do buldge a little bit, but IMO thats a good thing. The stock 215's dont protect the lip of the wheels at all, so some extra rubber by the lip is a good thing. Some tires tend to run a little bit wider and some narrower than others. For example Nittos tend to run a bit narrow & BFG's tend to run a bit wider than the norm. If I decide to keep my stock wheels on this coming summer I'm gonna go with 235/45's, as I already know that 225/45 look too damn short.

I'm considering 225/50s, not 235/50s. Thanks.

Sorry, misread. Well thats not too bad, but it'll still be taller than stock, and I think the stock tires look like balloons already. 235/45's will maintain 100% correct diameter, maintain a good ride, improve traction, all while not rubbing any suspension/body pieces and protecting your wheels. I dont see why you would go with either 225's, to be honest. Maybe if you had it lowered and wanted a low-profile tire, a 225/45 would be decent I guess.

I 've been thinking about 245/45-17s on stock rims. Is that too much? Tire height is only 652mm, while stock 215/50s are 646mm. 6mm is less than a quarter inch height difference-barely affecting the speedo. I wanted to go as wide as possible without changing overall height, but wondered if the 245s would be too sick on stock rims. Thinking about the Michelin Pilot AS for a good all around, high mileage tire.
...must have width

I will say yes. On top of possible crazy rubbing the tires will look bad. I believe 245s are not even recommended on 7" wide rims.

Here's mine before I detailed the car...you can see how much better the wheel wells fill in with these tires...

Sith-
I'm like you; I like a little sidewall on my tires. I don't find extra large rims with no sidewall tires attractive. It looks like the car is riding around on it's rims. Maybe it's because I grew up in a time when super low profile tires didn't even exist! The rough ride is also too hard on my bony ass.

Your wheels look great, but I wonder if I could go even a little wider. The 235/50-17 and the 245/50-17 are both compatible with the 7" rim. The problem is that the 245 is more than an inch taller than the stock tire, so maybe that's too much, but the 235 is about .8 inch taller. Would I really be risking rub with the 235s? Isn't there enough clearance in the wheel well to handle a tire that is only .8 inches taller and .8 inches wider?

Found this cool site to calculate speedo error:

yeah those do look good sith. i need some new tires come spring. have been going back and forth between the 225 and the 235, but i think the 235 looks like it is sticking out from the wheel just a little much for my taste. I think i will be going with the 225's myself. But i do like the 45's slightly better. how do those tires grip?

You can fit 245's on the stock wheel, I've seen it done on an 01 CL-S. It looked kind of goofy and way to wide for the wheels. When you have that much sidewall buldge you lose ALOT of cornering due to the extra flex in the sidewall. Plus its plain not safe because the tire is not seating on the rim how it is designed to, there is much higher stress since its such a wide tire on a narrow rim. There's a reason no mfr suggests wider than 225 on a 7" wheel, so I say 235/45/17 is the best possible size if you want some more rubber. Same overall diameter as stock, still within a reasonable size so that the tire isnt dwarfing the rim, and no "balloon" look from overly large aspect ratio.

are there any pictures of what the stock 01 cl-s rims look like on 235/45/17 tires?? I'm going to be in need of some new tires in about 3-5k miles...and I don't even know where to begin. All I know is that I'm in So Cal., lol, so I pretty much want a Summer tire, something sticky, and has a lot of life to it.

1st...thanks for the compliment rock2534! ...since it has been rainy alot, i haven't pushed the cls too hard...for my current style of driving, i can see/feel very little difference...once it warms up/drys up...i'll really be able to tell you...

That is what has been stopping me from ordering the 235's, but i just saw this CL on ebay and it says it has 235 falkens, and they look good on the car. So i am still not sure which size to go with. Anyone else have a good picture, preferably from the front or back that shows how far out the 235's stick out. The ones on JTKZ13's pic on page 1 seem to stick out further, but they are different tires. anyway, here is the pic. 235 falkens
