Yay electrical problems!

This started happening about a couple weeks ago.

Once in a while (maybe every 10-50 miles) the electrical system just sh!ts out. Everything turns off...but one for a split second and then comes back on as if nothing happened. (Gauges drop, CD player stops, lights go out, etc...). Whats a bit weird is that the engine doesn't actually skip a beat.

I am going to go tighten the terminals and ground connections tomorrow, but I just can't imagine its as simple as that. Anyone come across something like this before? Thoughts?

I'll say bad cables, grounds or battery. Those are easy to check. While it's running wouldn't be the ignition switch. That would be while starting the car.

Interesting. I always thought that was only in starting conditions. But I still don't see why the lights would all go out but the car would still be running if it was going bad?

On a side note I now have a thing to check for my mom's 95 Altima that just stopped on her while driving a few days ago & won't start back up now. It has fuel & spark, & tries to turn over.

If the lights go off I don't think it's the switch but a loose connection somewhere.

This would happen on Acura Vigors pretty regularly, its the only time an Acura left me stranded. Short story the solder on the wiring that connects the interior fuse box to the the ignition switch gets hot and I actually found drops of solder on the carpet.

Well if the ignition switch is going bad i guess it would be similar to taking the key out.....the car would shut off if it didnt sense a key

Did you look at the part I referrer to in the URL? I mentioned it was a common Vigor problem, the CL shares the same design. It isn't the Ignition Switch itself but the wiring that connects the switch to the Fuse Box.

that happened to me a bunch of times and i tightened the terminals as well. but it didnt fix the problem. turned out there was an incredible thin layer of corrosion around the entire inside of the terminals that was causing the problem for me. make sure you take them off and wire brush them clean!
