Transmition died :(

Bought the car with 72k miles. Had it for 4 years and put 90k additional miles on it. It's close to 160k now and my transmition gave up. Not too bad i think. I want to post this, to inform others whos tranny is about to die, what to look for and what to expect.

First symptoms was the heat that i started to feel by putting my hand on the plastics by the gear shifter. This happend like 4-5 months ago.

Second, the day before its died, i lost a gear driving on the highway, and three lights went up :Check Engine, VSA and the one that shows VSA off.

Took it to autozone, got checked, and they said spark plugs were bad and torque converter has problems.
Car felt good for the rest of the day. Died on the way to work the next morning.

I paid 1900$ to fix (new rebuilt tranny put in) it here in chicagoland area. 24 mnth, 24k miles warranty.

My only concern how long this tranny will hold, any experiences?

I have 2001 Cl Type S

...sorry to hear that!
...no telling... mine was replaced about a year ago by Acura, and I still hold my breath sometimes when there is a funny sound or alittle jerk in the ride... I am on my 3rd tranny...

If you had something hot in the shifter area it was not transmission related. Trany is located behind drivers side wheel - left side engine compartment

I just had my 3rd Tranny rebuilt.

My first tranny went at 33K miles the second lasted 65K miles and the third lasted 69K miles and I just had my tranny rebuilt about 1 k miles but this is the first one that was rebuilt by someone other then ACURA but he used a raybesto 3rd gear clutch pack sonnax end plugs and a tranny cooler with AMSOIL ATF synthtic. I paid 3K for the rebuild but got a 3/36 k warrenty i called like 10 rebuilders and the cheapest was like $2200 but only offered 12/12 warrenty.

Its totally random. Some have had it gone as they were driving it off the lot, some about 15k miles and a few are still on their original trannies with over 100k on them.

I have almost 150k on my 01 CLS and this is my 3rd tranny... I would say that it is alittle less than 70k because I have almost 20k on this one... I forgot about the mileage on this 3rd one... I used to drive a whole lot more, but now my wife's truck does the long hauls and my car is a to and from work DD mainly...

I know! Isnt it just krazy!!! Random is the word!

I would tell anyone in their correct state of mind, who just cannot live without a CLS, to buy an 2003, 6 speed... and call it a day... an auto tranny is just buying time every time you start it up and drive around the block!

People that bought the car used have no clue how many times the transmission was replaced.. Acura corp does not even know the only people that know is the dlr that changed the tranny.. My first tranny was done at park ave acura and second at wayne acura and they had no clue it was replaced once b4.. Acura is keeping how many trannies they replaced under wraps so people dont know how common the problem actually is.. I am on my 4th and my friend had a 2002 TLs thae went throuh 2 was on his 3rd when he sold it at 100K 3 years ago... So what I am trying to say is that if u bought the car used you have no clue what tranny it is on.. U can look at the tranny and see if the vin is on it and if it has the oil-jet but thats it.. I would not take a DLRs word on it either if u bought it from a DLR!

How do you know if a tranny has been replaced and if it has the oil jet? What does a person look for when looking at the VIN# on the transmission?
