Question Is a transmission from an '07 Odyssey a suitable replacement?

I have gone back through pages and pages of posts concerning the transmission in the CLs. Many of the threads are incomplete and some of them sort of confused me too, but I got enough out of them to understand that transmissions from other models of Acura or Honda could be used as replacements, and that some were actually a substantial upgrade in that the notorious 3rd gear failure had been fixed in later models.

There is a transmission for sale on E-Bay that is very reasonably priced and close enough to me that I could go pick it up - meaning no freight charges - but I'm not certain that its one of the good ones to use as a replacement.

So that, in a long-winded sort of way, gets me around to asking if this is the one I want? 2007 Odyssey - 3.5 Liter 6 cylinder engine?

If I read other posts correctly the case of the transmission requires modification - drilling and possibly threading a hole or two. Other than that its a straight replacement. Is that correct?

I've got a spare engine and I'd like to pick up the best transmission to hook up to it, then just wait until they are needed.

I believe the 07-up is a different design. Most of the people looking for the Odyssey transmissions seemed to be going for the 02-04 model years.

Yikes! I just went and read for a couple of hours on the problems the Odyssey people are having with their transmissions. It sounds to me like their transmissions are almost as bad as ours; same types of failures with about the same frequency.

So now I'm finding it hard to understand why one would work well in a CL if it doesn't work in the vehicle it was installed in.

I bought an 06 Oddy tranny. The housing looks almost idential to mine, just a couple of small differences as noted in the other thread to make it fit.

Many Thanks and more advice sought ...

First off Thank you all very much for putting me on the right track. So I've gone hunting again and I've found two transmissions that I think are what I want within a distance that will make shipping reasonable.

Let me make sure I'm looking at the right one now. The transmissions I'm considering are both from 2006 Odyssey vans. The both have a tag on them that shows them to be BGRA model transmissions and they also have what appears to be a consecutive serial number and then the designation 5RGRAA7 written on two lines. Is this the one I want? Oh, and on getting it (one of them has 30,000 miles on it and the other has 60,000) should I pull the pan and change the filter? I haven't seen anyone mention changing the filter, in fact I don't even know if these transmissions have filters - but if they don't I'd sure be surprised. Are there any seals or anything else that it would be smart to change while the transmission is setting on a pallet?

As alway, in expectation of good information I Thank You in advance.

There are filters, but no pan per se. Id go with the lower mileage tranny, but find out how long its been sitting in the yard first.

Thank you for that advice. Actually thank you very much - I hadn't given any thought to how long or under what conditions each had been setting. As counterintuitive as it might sound I'm going to go for the higher milage box. The reason is I do not know where or how the low milage transmission has been stored but I do know that the more used on was pulled two weeks ago, drained and put on a pallet, and hasn't been out of the shop since.

Just to bring this up to date before I post another - and actually quite different - transmission question I'll tell you all what I did.

I bought a transmission from an '06 Ody', it has 60,000 miles on it and was working fine until the van was ass-ended and totaled. I paid $600 for the transmission. I arranged shipping via UPS Freight from the transmission's location in northern Illinois to the closest UPS Freight facility to my home for pickup. The UPS facility is about 35 miles from here so that's not a problem at all. The shipping cost was right at $200 for a total transmission cost of $800.

My car now has 218,000 miles on it, the current transmission was rebuilt and installed at 204,000 and in fact is still under guarantee and will remain so until early spring. When I bought the car I got a spare engine with it, the engine has 62,000 on it. So my plan is to put new belts and water pump on the spare engine, mate the Ody' transmission to it and then wait until spring or the failure of the current transmission to do the switch. I won't be doing the switch myself, I'm getting to old to do that sort of work anymore. However I'm about as lucky as can be in that my mechanic will do an engine/transmission swap for me very inexpensively - $200 plus any parts that may be needed.

So now I've got a plan. Plans are good, they save you time, money, and aggravation. When my current transmission lets go, as we all know it will, I won't be at the mercy of a dealer or forced to pay an outrageous price for a replacement box because I need one one immediately and am in no position to negotiate a reasonable deal.

So that's all good and fine, but you know what the very best part of this "be prepared" philosophy? Its that now I can go out and just wail on the car, have fun, let her rip. I don't have to baby either the engine or the transmission and there are some roads here in north eastern West Virginia (up in the mountains) that just beg for "spirited driving".

Better to be prepared and front the money now then be blindsided and raped with a rusty pole.

What if it takes 2-3 years until you need the replacement engine, as it then has 2-3 years less lifetime on the belts? (I guess you drive a lot?)

Actually, it would be kind of cool to have an engine-tranny assembly on casters so you could work on it.

So I should start looking for a low-mileage 06 Ody AT for my 01 CL-S?

Tosh,

Actually my plan is to get the engine and transmission ready to put in this winter and then have the switch done by my mechanic this spring no matter what the condition of the existing (currently 218,800 mile) engine and transmission. I see this car as having a lot more miles in front of it.

Does a shop prefer to replace engine+transmission as a bolted-together assembly, or engine and transmission separately?
