Timing Belt Q?

Anyone changing their timing belt before 105k? Does it really matter that its been 7 years? I have 84k so idk wether i should go ahead and do it or not.

You can wait a little longer but remember that time takes a toll on the belt more then mileage. If its been driven hard or with high revs or sits outside in the winter, then I would get ready to change it.

If the car sits outside it is more exposed to the elements, I would replace it because it is a 7 year old belt, thats just me though. speaking of which my aunt rarely drives farther than 10 miles a day and her timing belt and water pump went out on her solara which is an 2001 I think it only has 66k miles on it.

And if the belt breaks on this engine, the pistons contact the valves which means engine swap time. A job that costs a lot more then a 105k service.

I'm at 100K. I've been getting quotes as well. $600-$800 are what I'm getting. And not from Acura since they refused to work on my car. Although I haven't tried the Honda dealer. May do that.

Kind of a case of robbery....

I bought all my own parts for less than $200 (all top of the line)

And got a quote from a local shop for $450 for the water pump, timing belt, and driving belts

I bought my own OEM parts seperately (about 500 dollars) and was charged about 400 for labor including valve adjustment.

Price depends how complete you want your 105k service to be. If you opt for vave adjustment or not and if your going basic with aftermarket parts with timing belt, water pump, plugs or doing what I did and changed tensioner, idler, cam seals, radiator hoses, etc.

I just called them again and they said they have a 10% off 105k service special. You also get an additional 5% off if you pay cash. that comes out to $608 with genuine parts and labor, and 12 month warranty. It's the same service you get from the dealer, all drive belts and water pump. I think im going to get it done soon.

If I were u I would change it. Its always better to be safe than sorry. Especially if you have the funds to do it now. You dont want to be the one saying I should of changed it!

I called all the dealers in NJ and i was shocked how different pricing they offer. From $888 to $1199 depends on the dealer. One dealer was offering service for $940 and and i was told that on their website is coupon code worth $100 off any service so that could be $840 + tax and loaner for the rest of the day and carwash. Also called Honda & Acura shop that quoted me $650 with everything but doubt they offer loaners. So my point is that its good to make some calls also i think they say different pricing if you come to the dealer and different if u call them and ask. Im not sure which one to go to but i was also considering doing it myself to save money but i think it worth it to let someone more experienced to do it.

The hardest part in doing this maintenance (perhaps in your case, being in NJ and all) is finding a warm place to do it and getting the crank bolt loose.

It cost me $314 for all the OEM pullies, TB belt, Tensioner, WP, A/C belt and an o-ring for the oil dipstick.

A valve adjustment was also done, which was cake to do. Even if you used the lowest quote of $650, there is a $336 savings in labor. The labor money I saved is sitting in a tire fund which will be needed in the next 5K.

You can do it! hehe

The 105,000 maintenance sounds like a big one. Beyong changing oil and the occasional brake job, I am a car repair tard. I am going to price people out here in rockville maryland but anything under a grand sounds like a deal to me if it keeps the ol 2001 CL-S running a few more years (if the tranny doesn't hose me first).

Whats the best place to order the parts needed for this maintenance if I want to get it done at my local shop. I'd like to use all acura parts if possible.

just picked up my car from the shop after $585 parts and labor and its running fresh, the car has 127k, I looked at the belt and it looked fine. however i guess there is no way of telling if it was stretched at all. If it gets stretched and slips then we're f*cked.
Good luck!

The belt isnt the only part that could fail. If the bearings in the tensioner fail that will lead to catastrophic damage as well. Same goes for the water pump.

if your not good with engines don't do it. They aren't the hardest things to do on the whole car but it can be a frustrating and long job. but i also don't pay dealer prices because any good mechanic can do it (I timed my first car up in shop class after about a month) so i just take mine to local repair garages and have it done since i no longer have the resources and didn't like doing it, they have always done a great job and saved a lot on repair costs and car ran great.

Because the 04-up TL had a 3.2 and a 3.5, but the 3.2 is not the same engine we have (J32A2 vs A3). The timing belts are different. Check out of the part numbers.

The OEM TB part# is 14400-P8A-A02 for both the six speed and auto. If you look at the center belt on the link that is the number. That's a decent price for all those parts. Make sure the rubber gasket for the WP seats securely within the channel on the WP housing before installation, otherwise there could be a leak and that would not be good.
