Ticking...
Hey everyone. My '03 cls6 is ticking like a mother...i think it's the valves. Does anyone know how much a valve adjustment should be? Just looking for a ballpark estimate.

make sure its your valves first. I'm guessing it's your PSV "purge Solenoid Valve". The purge solenoid valve is loacted near the rear of the engine right next to the firewall on the drivers side. You should be able to tell if its comign from that area or the engine...I can actually feel mine ticking if I put my finger on it.

Ok. so I just went out and listened again. That solenoid is definately part of it, what is it for and how much to replace? Also, the valves are definitely making too much noise but I can't explain the noise...And there is noise coming from the front of the engine as well, i'm thinking an exhaust leak at the manifold? Anyway, thanks for the help.

Ticking from the purge valve is normal. Its could be your fuel injectors, (which is normal as well) Does the ticking change with engine temperature? i.e. Louder when cold and quieter when hot, or the other way around? 5.2 hours for a valve adjustment, damn. They made a mistake. At my dealership we charge 2.5 hours at 120$ an hour.

Why do dealerships feel $120 an hour is reasonable for blue collar labor? No offense to anyone who is a "certified mechanic" but why do they feel this cost is fair to fix a ball joint, replace rotors, or something so simple.
Prices across the board for dealership work are just ridiculous and don't bring up how many certifications they have or get. I have no certs and every problem I have ever had on any of my cars I have been able to tackle (besides tranny and OPD sensor)
This has always baffled me as to why the cost isn't closer to $60-$70.

The purge valve ticking is normal, however it should not be audible. It should be silent. It will still work fine however.
The fuel injectors ticking is common & normal as stated & is mistaken for valve tick.
The engine on a CLS is just noisy by design as it ages.
The vales do loosen over time & tend to need adjustment. Not often though. Once every 75K miles should be ok.
Around $500 is normal for a valve adjustment.

Don't forget overhead; phone, lights, loaner cars and the waiting room coffee all are paid from the labor charge.

Oh, I understand about the wages of the other employees but my point is, how has our society become conditioned to feel that $120 and hour for blue collar labor is reasonable.
I know that the mechanic gets nowhere close to that amount in total so I am not talking about the money they make.
I will never ever take my car to a dealership unless it is within warranty and will be covered 100% or unless I have absolutely no choice.

I Had this same problem in my 96 2.5 TL.. Took her in to car shop, Said it could be my Valves sticking. Did An Oil Change, Tranny Fluid exchange and starting using nothing but Shell V-power Gas(91) and some Fuel injector cleaner. After a while noise went away and never came back. Could have been just a fluke but it worked. Try it out man see if it works.

CL-S 6Speed is rarely in
When I bought my car in Jan 08, in never made the ticking noise, EVER. Then one chilly summer night, I heard it faintly. It didn't do it on start up. Wasn't until I started driving or the car had warmed up a little. Then whenever I wasn't on the gas, it made the tick. Then it magically went away. It wasn't until Oct 08 that I heard it again.
After that, the ticking NEVER stopped. Cold, warm, start up, after driving. You name the time, it made the ticking. I decided to break down and buy a new Purge Valve from Acura. Installed it and volla! No more tick.
Three weeks later, ticking again. But it seems to only tick now if its under 45 degrees. You can barely hear the new one outside the car when its is ticking, but man is it f-in annoying inside the car. Also noticed, that now when it ticks, under the car between where the front door stops and the back wheel begins, there is also a loud ticking noise on the drivers side. WTF!!!!!
The car never made these sounds until I owned it for about 6 months. Its really embarrassing when you pull up somewhere and your friends are like "what the hell is that ticking noise? you got some kinda valve problem?"
Whatever the problem is, its obviously a poor design by Acura. Who the hell wants to hear that noise and be told its normal. I am about to undergo the task of relocating and wrapping it somewhere else in the engine compartment where I don't have to hear it inside the car.
What makes matters worse, is when you ask the dealer about it, they have no freaking clue what your talking about.
OK my rant is done. I just really really really really really hate this goddamn noise.
